Inge’s attachment to Christianity caused him to be expelled after a short time by his brother-in-law Sweyn, or Blot-Sweyn from his revival of the old sacrifices.
In the year 1000, when the Norwegian king was in Pomerania, a coalition was formed between the king of Sweden, Sweyn Forkbeard, king of Denmark, and earl Eric of Lade, and the allies way laid their enemy off the coast near Rügen and overthrew him in the great sea-battle of Svolder.
Anund Jacob of Sweden, now sole king, early in his reign allied himself with Olaf II of Norway against Canute II of Denmark, who had demanded the restitution of the rights possessed by his father King Anund, Sweyn in Norway.

Sweyn's vigilant eye had darted upon him, and instantly his every fibre was alert with hostile instinct; and, half divining, half incredulous, of Christian's object in stooping to Tyr, he came hastily, wary, wrathful, resolute to oppose the malice of his wild-eyed brother.
Sweyn could feel the planks quivering, as on the instant his hand was upon the door, flinging it open, to face the blank porch, and beyond only snow and sky, and firs aslant in the wind.
Sweyn the while was observant of his brother, despite the continual check of finding, turn and glance when he would, Christian's eyes always upon him, with a strange look of helpless distress, discomposing enough to the angry aggressor.

The Danish History, Introduction (Part I)
Sweyn Aageson is known to have had strong family connections with the monastery of St. Laurence; but there is only a tolerably strong probability that he, and therefore that Saxo, was actually a member of it.
Guthred-Canute of Northumberland), whose noble birth washed out this blot of his captivity, and there is a curious tradition of a conqueror setting his hound as king over a conquered province in mockery.
But about 1185 we find Sweyn Aageson complimenting Saxo, and saying that Saxo "had `determined' to set forth all the deeds" of Sweyn Estridson, in his eleventh book, "at greater length in a more elegant style".

 Anglo Saxon Chronicles 965-A.D 1066-A.D
And Sweyn the earl, son of Godwin the earl, came in to Bosham with seven ships; and he obtained the king's protection, and he was promised that he should be held worthy of everything which he before possessed.
While Godwin the earl and Beorn the earl lay at Pevensey, then came Sweyn the earl, and begged Beorn the earl, with fraud, who was his uncle's son, that he would be his companion to the king at Sandwich, and better his affairs with him.
Then whilst they were riding, then begged Sweyn of him that he would go with him to his ships: saying that his seamen would depart from him unless he should at the soonest come thither.

Many thanks to Geirr and Sweyn for a well run Sumbel and for travelling to be with us on Yule and your continued support of the AET.
Geir and Sweyn were marvellous to work our sumbel for us in Rurik's absence, and we owe them a great debt of thanks.
As for my assessment of the blot - well, obvious I am biased, but I will say that over preparing for it really helped - I didn't have to worry about what I was saying or how the poetry went even once.

As it happens, we feel that 8 blots a year is a manageable number, organisationally speaking, and assures that the celebrations are neither too distant from one another nor too close to retain their sense of 'special occasion-ness'.
To hold a public blot once a month is admirable, though I daresay that it is not particularly true to what any of the old cultures did.
We remind ourselves to open ourselves to hear their guidance, to remember that we are conduits for forces beyond us, that our egos are shipwreck flotsam compared to the partly inherited True Selves that bind us to the forces of creation, destruction and rebirth.

 Dance in the Northern Tradition
I have attended a Freyr's blot where "Thread the Needle" was used to symbolize a rebirth of the participants from the mound.
If the idea of the "transfer of energy" does not seem "authentically Heathen," consider that the blot offerings of choice bear high levels of energy -- the sugar from honey in mead, the flesh of an animal, etc. I am not suggesting that dance replace the blot, by any means.
Gomme makes a connection of this game to the Battle (and breaking) of London Bridge, when Ethelred, after the death of Sweyn, was assisted by Olaf of Norway in retaking and entering London.

He opened constant and friendly communication with his uncle Sweyn, King of Denmark; he availed himself sedulously of all the influence over the Anglo-Danes which his mother's birth made so facile.
And now, too, gradually, that empire which Hilda had gained over his brother Sweyn began to sway this man, heretofore so strong in his sturdy sense.
Before, though by temper conciliatory, yet, through honesty, indifferent to the enmities he provoked, in his adherence to what his conscience approved, he now laid himself out to propitiate all ancient feuds, soothe all jealousies, and convert foes into friends.
