For growers of sugar beets and cane, business is sweet and sour   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
UGAR BEET grower Kenneth Frye of Hereford has a mission: convincing farmers in one of the state's richest agricultural counties that sugar is a sweet crop.
Beet acreage was up significantly in the late 1980s and peaked in the early 1990s, but has been in a decline during the last couple of years, Roney said.
Ideally, beets should be grown within 30 miles of the plant because a ton of beets must be hauled to make 220 pounds of sugar and the company pays the freight, Hill said.

The tops of beets are particularly rich in manganese which makes their iron content valuable in nourishing the liver and the red corpuscles of the blood.
Raw beets and their juices when properly extracted have been used effectively in regulating menstrual periods and premature menopause as well as constipation.
It is advisable however to drink not more than 8 ounces (1/2 pint) of straight beet juice per day until the body is able to tolerate more of it.

Refiners Shun Bioengineered Sugar Beets, Frustrating Plans for Monsanto, Aventis Scott Kilman / Wall Street Journal ...
Sugar beets, grown by 12,000 farmers in states such as North Dakota, Minnesota and Michigan, are the source of roughly half of the granular sugar consumed in the U.S. The sugar beet, which can weigh several pounds, is white and far bigger than the red table beet grown as a side dish.
The U.S. food industry's shunning of genetically modified sugar is a setback for crop biotechnology rivals Monsanto Co. and Aventis SA, and a major blow for the handful of sugar-beet breeders licensed to use their genes.
Sugar beets are a minor U.S. crop, grown on just 1.43 million acres this year, but the niche could be very lucrative for Monsanto and Aventis, which are trying to recoup their investment in herbicide-resistant genes by getting them into several crops.

 SUGARBEETS AND THE IDAHO ECONOMY
Loss of the sugar industry would be a severe blow to all farmers in Idaho, all communities where processing occurs and to the State, in general, due to loss of employment, income and a reduction in tax revenue.
Because beets are grown on the most productive land, essentially all of the land taken from beets would be planted to crops such as potatoes, beans, grain, forages and onions.
Gross farm income per acre increases from the $416 with beets to $446 without beets and using national and Idaho prices, and is a 6.7 percent increase.

GM sugar beet 'far more environmentally friendly' - 06 December 2003 - New Scientist
So concludes a controversial new analysis that is the first to measure the wider impact of such crops, including their contribution to global warming, damage to the ozone layer and toxicity to aquatic life.
"Overall, herbicide-resistant GM beet was 15 to 50 per cent better for the environment, depending on what impact was being measured," says Richard Phipps of the School of Agriculture at the University of Reading in Berkshire, UK.
Maize with GM resistance to a particular weedkiller did better than non-GM maize, but the result may become a moot point as the EU is soon to ban the use of that weedkiller on conventional maize.

Arnaud thinks that soil transported from beet growing areas to assist with dyke reconstruction might have carried the seeds, or that seeds might have been dropped in dirt from lorries transporting harvested beet to factories.
