Blu-ray Disc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Blu-ray Disc will be able to store substantially more data than a DVD, because of the shorter wavelength (405 nm) of the blue-violet laser (DVDs use a 650-nm-wavelength red laser and CDs an infrared 780 nm laser), which allows more information to be stored digitally in the same amount of space.
Because the Blu-ray standard places data so close to the surface of the disc, early discs were susceptible to dust and scratches and had to be enclosed in plastic caddies for protection.
The disc uses MPEG-2 compression at a resolution of 1920 × 1080 (it was not announced whether it will be 1080p or 1080i) and claims to use a menu interface that would succeed current DVD-Video interfaces.

 Howstuffworks "How Blu-ray Discs Work"
Discs store digitally encoded video and audio information in pits -- spiral grooves that run from the center of the disc to its edges.
Because the data is closer to the surface, a hard coating is placed on the outside of the disc to protect it from scratches and fingerprints.
According to T3: Pioneer goes beyond Blu-Ray, Pioneer is developing an optical disc that will blow away the hard disc in most of our PCs in terms storage capacity, holding 500 GB of data.

Pioneer's Andy Parsons Talks Blu-ray Disc
While covering the latest Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD developments at CES, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to chat with Andy Parsons, senior vice president of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., about his company's Blu-ray Disc plans in the year ahead.
If you think about optical disc history, starting with laserdisc back in 1980-81, for years that was the very best quality you could get on any format as far as standard definition video was concerned.
The compact disc came out in 1982, and that was for many, many years the reference standard for audio.

GameSpot Forums - System Wars - blu- ray is only good for games...
I didnt mind the multiple discs but if they can make it on one disc for the same price then it is better.  But if it costs more I would rather get the multiple disc set.
Yeah, but the audio alone takes up half the disc space for this game.  It seems to me that something would have to be cut in order to make room for all of this audio, which wouldn't be the case if it were on a single Blu-ray disc.
BluRay, which would be about as costly as DVD in the long-run, can handle future growth down the road.

BluRay has been suffering from production problems because of the accuracy needed for the blue laser and the purported, increase storage.
BluRay requires the usage of a flavor of Java called JEM that because of the varied implementations of Java on future players, it will be impossible to guarantee that a BluRay disc's menuing system will run on all players.
BluRay is supposed to release their first player in May 2006 through Pioneer at $1,800 however it is very likely that that release date will slip.

In February 2002, a large group of companies announced the introduction of the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format, the next generation in optical storage.
The new format offers an immense storage capacity (up to 50GB) that is perfect for High Definition video recording and distribution, as well as for storing large amounts of data.
More than 20 companies have already announced Blu-ray Disc products, including players, recorders, High-Definition computer drives, recordable media and PC applications, as well as over 100 movie and music titles.

This is another thing, the Blu-Ray reads data at the same rate all over the disc as the disc spin speed varies.
If we assume a maximum disc rotation speed of 10,000 RPM, then 12x at the outer diameter should be possible (about 400Mbps).
This is why the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) already has plans to raise the speed to 8x (288Mbps) or more in the future.

 DVDFILE.COM Forum - My case against HD-DVD/Bluray
For a format to become mainstream the prices for the equipment has to be at a certain level of affordability and even the most dim-witted individual has to be able to see why he/she must own this new format.
Therefore quality is sacrificed, as the backwards compatible disc hold less than half as much as non-backwards compatible Blu-Ray disc, meaning bitrate on video and soundtracks will have to be lower on a backwards compatible Bluray disc than a regular Bluray disc, or less extras included for the same video/audio quality.
Bluray discs appear to be offering the content of regular DVDs at much higher cost.

Since it is reasonable to anticipate single layer discs as the dominant format initially, it seems clear that you will be able to store more data on a BluRay disc than an HD-DVD.
It will mean your resolution is slightly diminished from 1080p on BluRay to 1080i on HD-DVD, but this is relatively minor considering there isn’t an HDTV capable of displaying 1080p at the moment.
The fact that a multi-layer BluRay disc could store 100GB of data would make it a fantastic media for anyone looking to build offline data storage or enterprise backup systems.

Blu-ray is based on a disc with a different substrate structure that will require new manufacturing processes, at a cost that's yet to be revealed, although a spokesman for Philips has said it wasn't a significant variable.
But given all the signs (Sony will likely use BluRay to go hand-in-hand with promoting the advantage of their 1920 x 1080 SXRD chip), I think it's reasonable to suspect that Blu Ray is gearing up for a debut.
If they announced that they were ready to bring BluRay to market and had plans to do so in the near future, it might prompt Toshiba/NEC to rush to bring their product to market sooner than their development timetable has mapped in order to establish some competition to keep BluRay from getting a dominant foothold.

 Blu-ray.com - Definitions - What is Blu-ray?
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson).
While current optical disc technologies such as DVD, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM rely on a red laser to read and write data, the new format uses a blue-violet laser instead, hence the name Blu-ray.
The benefit of using a blue-violet laser (405nm) is that it has a shorter wavelength than a red laser (650nm), which makes it possible to focus the laser spot with even greater precision.

The Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF) still haven't made a final decision about what video codecs will be included, but MPEG-2 is already part of the specification.
You're still sticking to this one point, applying it broadscale with no thought, and so even movies which had no commentary when initially released (which is many--adding them later on in their own special editions) and have all their extras on a 2nd disk are still "hacks" and objectionable.
Original non-SB DVDs that didn't have bonus material didn't use up all the space on a DL disc so when the bonus stuff was added later in Special Editions etc. they didn't have to resort to lowering the bitrate to fit them on the same disc.

The Blu-ray Disc content management system includes three primary components: Advanced Access Content System (AACS), "BD+", a Blu-ray specific enhancement for content protection renewability, and "ROM Mark", a measure unique to Blu-ray Disc to guard against mass production piracy or the mass duplication and sale of unauthorized copies of pre-recorded media.
ROM Mark, which is unique to Blu-ray Disc, is a new technology designed specifically to thwart large scale, mass production piracy, a problem that experts estimate costs the movie industry alone in excess of $3 billion per year in lost revenue.
The BDA also adopted "BD+", a Blu-ray Disc specific programmable renewability enhancement that gives content providers an additional means to respond to organized attacks on the security system by allowing dynamic updates of compromised code.

We have read that the Blu-ray high definition disc will be introduced in 2006, but now we hear that there is some discontent in the the ranks of the Bluray camp of supporters.
He commented that the 25GB discs will be out in the first half of 2006, but downplayed the need for the double layer version as something that the industry would “grow into over time.” However, Chapek of Disney let it be known clearly that they had wanted the 50GB capacity version “from the get-go."
But Chapek said he envisions packing discs with a full panoply of high-def bonus materials, extensive interactive features and other new types of content, which would require the higher capacity of the 50GB version.
