-Edison Cylinder and Disc Record Development-
Recording and reproducing methods were further improved, and a removable wax cylinder record was developed.
The Amberol records were not known for their durability or sound quality, and they couldn't compare to the plastic indestructible records that were being offered by competitors.
This particular record has a side entitled "Let Us Not Forget", in which Edison himself gives a short speech about the victory of the Allies in World War I. Blue Amberol cylinders have plaster cores and their titles are printed on the end.

Blue Amberol Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blue Amberol Records are cylinder recordings manufactured by the Edison company in the USA from 1912 to 1929.
These cylinder records are made of an early variety of plastic patented by the Edison company called "Blue Amberol", which was able to withstand hundreds, possibly over a thousand, playings, with only moderate increase in surface noise if played on well-maintained machines with a stylus in good condition.
The "Amberol" plastic of the cylinders is molded around a core of plaster.

Phonograph cylinder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early cylinder records would commonly wear out after they were played a few dozen times; the buyer could then either bring the worn cylinders back to the dealer to be traded in as partial credit for purchase of new recordings, or have their surface shaved smooth so new recordings could be made on them.
The ability to record as well as play back sound was an advantage to cylinder phonographs over the competition from cheaper disc record phonographs which began to be mass marketed at the end of the 1890s, as the disc system machines could be used only to play back pre-recorded sound.
Record companies usually had a generic printed label on the outside of the cylinder package, with no indication of the identity of the individual recording inside.

Edison Records was the first record label, pioneering recorded sound and an important player in the early record industry.
In October of 1912 the new Blue Amberol Records, made of an early type of plastic, were introduced for public sale.
After the war Edison Records started a marketing campaign, hiring prominent singers and Vaudeville performers to perform along side and alternating with Edison records of their performances played on top-of-the-line "Laboratory Model" Edison Diamond Disc Phonographs.

Blue Amberol Records are cylinder recordings (cylinder recordings: more facts about this subject) manufactured by the Edison company in the USA (USA: The army of the United States of America; organizes and trains soldiers for land warfare) from 1912 to 1929.
These cylinder records are made of an early variety of plastic (plastic: Generic name for certain synthetic or semisynthetic materials that can be molded or extruded into objects or films or filaments or used for making e.g.
The "Amberol" plastic of the cylinders is molded around a core of plaster (plaster: A mixture of lime or gypsum with sand and water; hardens into a smooth solid; used to cover walls and ceilings).

 -Edison Standard Model D Phonograph-
Because the Model H was designed to play molded 4-Minute wax cylinders, it's floating weight is not sufficient to contend with Blue Amberol cylinders that are excessively out-of-round due to swelling or improper reaming of the plaster core.
If the Blue Amberol cylinder is badly out-of-round and worn, the Model H has a tendency to skip and flutter as the record plays.
Blue Amberol cylinders are best played with a larger and heavier Diamond B reproducer specially fitted in an external horn phonograph or the Diamond B or Diamond C reproducer in an Edison Amberola phonograph.

On all prior reproducers the stylus bar was fixed, that is to say no lateral movement was allowed, and fine adjustment of a screw on the carrier arm was required to properly align the stylus with the groove.
While designed for 4-minute wax amberols, it can be safely used to play Indestructible 2 and: 4 minute records as well as Edison's Blue Amberol records, although sound reproduction will not be as good as that of the reproducers which were designed to play these celluloid records.
The short coming to this reproducer was that to change from a 2-minute record to a 4-minute record, the reproducer had to be removed from the phonograph so that the central part of the weight could be rotated to the correct position.

These cylinder records are made of an early variety of plastic pattented by the Edison company called "Blue Ameberol", which was able to withstand hundreds, possibly over a thousand, playings, with only moderate increase in surface noise if played on well-maintained machines with a stylus in good condition.
They can not be played succesfully on older machines set up to play the earlier standard of 2 minute cylinders, as the Amberols require a smaller stylus to track the groove and the worm-gear which moves the stylus over the surface of the cylinder must turn at a differnt rate.
This plaster core has proved the greatest problem with long-term survival of Blue Amberol Records, as the plaster often tends to expand over the decades, especially if exposed to mosture or kept in humid conditions.

'''Blue Amberol Records''' are phonograph cylinder cylinder recordings manufactured by the Edison company in the United States USA from 1912 to 1929.
From the mid 1910s on, the Edison Company concentrated most of their research on improving the sound of their gramophone record disc records, and their later cylinders are simply dubbing dubs of their discs.

It was fitted with a model L reproducer to play the 4 minute wax amberol records and from October 1912 with the diamond A reproducer to play the new blue amberol records.
The bottom record drawer was designed to fit 12 inch diamond disc records even though except for sample records and the much later Edison long play records, (1926), Edison never produced a 12 inch disc.

I apologize for posting the Blue Amberols in stages, but little by little I am trying to inventory a 25 years' accumulation of cylinder records.
Note: Celluloid records shrink, and the plaster in the Blue Amberols picks up moisture, so it's not unusual for Blue Amberol records to require reaming.

Three special Cylinder series were issued by the Edison company: the Special 4 Minute wax Amberol (10) in blue boxes, the Special 4 Minute wax Amberol (24) in orange and green boxes and the Special 4 Minute celluloid Blue Amberol (10) in blue boxes.
In 1910, to increase the sales of cylinder phonographs (nearly all the other companies had, at that time, abandonned cylinders for disc records; the last new Columbia cylinder Graphophone was issued in 1908) Edison isued a second 4 M wax Special Amberol serie called the "D" serie.
In 1912, when the 4 M celluloid cylinders were issued, a new Special Blue Amberol serie was also issued, even if at this time the combination attachment kits started to be quite obsolete (in fact, they were available untill as late as 1914).

Edison Records continued selling cyliners until they went out of business in 1929, but for the last decade these were simply dubbs of their commercial disc records intended for customers who still used cylinder phonographs purchased years before.
The audio fidelity was often comprable to the best of other record companies of the time, but they sold poorly as Edison's market share had declined to the point where it was no longer one of the leading companies and Edison had few distributors compared to leaders like Victor, Columbia, and Brunswick.

We expected that the demand for these records would be confined almost exclusively to the South, as the request that they be catalogued emanated from that section.

Their ears, such as they are, tell them that no 'blues' are worth hearing unless they are lugubriously howled, wailed or shrieked by Negro women or, less frequently, intoned by fl men.
The Blue Amberol records all had pitch wavers--the veteran recording expert, 'Bill' Hayes, told me, 'We never were able to find a way of making the Amberols run exactly true'--and the fluttery effect caused by the unsteadiness of pitch turns the piano on cylinders into a torment to my nerves.
A few record collecting magazines had been sent to Walsh by well-wishers but nothing else in the room indicated that he had devoted a life to studying and discussing old recordings.
