Blue Amberol Records. Who is Blue Amberol Records? What is Blue Amberol Records? Where is Blue Amberol Records? ...

The "Amberol" plastic of the cylinders is molded around a core of plaster.

Edison Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Edison Records continued selling cylinders until they went out of business in 1929, but for the last decade these were simply dubs of their commercial disc records intended for customers who still used cylinder phonographs purchased years before.
The audio fidelity was often comparable to the best of other record companies of the time, but they sold poorly as Edison's market share had declined to the point where it was no longer one of the leading companies and Edison had few distributors compared to leaders like Victor, Columbia, and Brunswick.
The masters for the Edison Records back catalogue were purchased by Henry Ford, and became part of the collection of the Henry Ford Museum.

In 1908 Edison introduced a new line of cylinders playing 4 rather than 2 minutes of music on the same sized record, achived by shrinking the grooves and spacing them twice as close together.

 Blue Amberol Records
These cylinder records are made of an early variety of plastic patented by the Edison company called "Blue Ameberol", which was able to withstand hundreds, possibly over a thousand, playings, with only moderate increase in surface noise if played on well-maintained machines with a stylus in good condition.
They can not be played successfully on older machines set up to play the earlier standard of 2 minute cylinders, as the Amberols require a smaller stylus to track the groove and the worm-gear which moves the stylus over the surface of the cylinder must turn at a different rate.
This plaster core has proved the greatest problem with long-term survival of Blue Amberol Records, as the plaster often tends to expand over the decades, especially if exposed to moisture or kept in humid conditions.

Brunswick Records: The Early Years   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Most pressed record numbers can be found at the bottom of the record label between the 5 and 7 o'clock positions, but many have the number in other positions around the label, including some with the numbers in different locations on the two sides of the same record.
Brunswick discs were recorded at 80 rpm and Brunswick advertised that its records contained a spiral groove at the end of the record to "ensure a perfect and automatic stopping of the record when the playing is completed.
The records and phonographs sold well though Urner admitted that early Brunswick phonographs had limitations because "the mechanical reproducer didn't have a very large range of tone." Many machines were sold on terms, usually a 12 to 18-month contract with 10% down.

The Edison Shop - Cylinder Phonograph Reproducers
While designed for 4-minute wax amberols, it can be safely used to play Indestructible 2 and: 4 minute records as well as Edison's Blue Amberol records, although sound reproduction will not be as good as that of the reproducers which were designed to play these celluloid records.
The short coming to this reproducer was that to change from a 2-minute record to a 4-minute record, the reproducer had to be removed from the phonograph so that the central part of the weight could be rotated to the correct position.
With the introduction of Edison's Blue Amberol Records in 1912 a new series of reproducers were designed to achieve the most accurate sound recreation then possible.

 The Dead media Project:Working Notes:16.6
The cylinders all had to be recorded from live music; hired bands played the same selection over and over in front of a bank of recording machines.
Most recordings of the time were folk music ("coon shouters" to use Edison's term) and popular ballads.
It was technically superior to anything on the market, but as was his habit Edison did not follow up with quality records that appealed to the high end of the market.

Edison:The History of the Edison Cylinder Phonograph
In response, the Amberol Record was presented in November 1908, which had finer grooves than the two-minute cylinders, and thus, could last as long as 4 minutes.
The finer sound of the cylinder was partly due to the fact that a cylinder had constant surface speed from beginning to end in contrast to the inner groove distortion that occurred on discs when the surface speed slowed down.
The Edison Company did not desert its faithful cylinder customers, however, and continued to make Blue Amberol cylinders until the demise of the company in 1929, although most from 1915 on were dubbed from the Diamond Discs.

Few stars of the stage made records regularly, exceptions being Bert Williams, Nora Bayes, and Al Jolson--even their output is minuscule compared with that of Henry Burr, Harry Macdonough, Lewis James, Vernon Dalhart, Irving Kaufman, and others who, for a long time, earned a living by recording.
