Blue Barron was born Harry Freidman in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 19, 1913.

Then when he has you indoctrinated in the skeletal structure of the tune, waiting for it to end, he re-opens it with bursts and fountains of melodic colors--elongated, spinning note-streams that rise and fall and rise again, transporting this listener, at least, on a heady film of captivating lyrical moon dust.
But the real genius of this performance (unless memory deceives me) is Barron's incorporation not merely of the Rodgers' influence but of Freddie Hubbard's recording of the tune with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers (in turn inspired by Clifford Brown's rich if straightforward interpretation of the tune on the Strings album).
Barron's fingers are like deft little waterbugs on the keyboard, and this trio swings with great subtlety and sophistication.

In a remote, rural area of San Bernardino County, the police vehicle in which they were passengers was struck head-on by another vehicle attempting to pass a tractor trailer, crossing into the oncoming traffic lane and colliding with the police vehicle.

One of the regulars at Bradley’s, Kenny Barron often came in to stretch out with his bassist friends after worldwide tours, appearing as a sideman on innumerable recording dates or teaching at Rutgers, from which he recently retired after 25 years.
When Barron wasn’t performing, chances are that he may have dropped in to Bradley’s to listen, for some of the greatest New York City-based jazz pianists performed there, including Thelonious Monk, Tommy Flanagan, Teddy Wilson, Jimmy Rowles, Cedar Walton and Hank Jones.

Following the success of its 1938 RCA hit "At a Perfume Counter," the Barron band became a New York ballroom mainstay and spent much of the 1940s headlining the Edison Hotel, headquarters of its coast-to-coast radio broadcasts.
Soon after, Barron was drafted to serve with the U.S. Army Airborne Division during World War II, naming singer Tommy Ryan to assume bandleader duties until his return.
Following Barron's return from duty, in 1949 he scored his biggest hit with the chart-topping "Cruisin' Down the River." However, the big-band era was by now drawing to a close, although he kept the orchestra afloat until 1956.

Last time out, we mentioned the passing of Blue Barron, a gentle fellow who ran a gentle band.
He seems to have been one of the first to have a real orchestra which, if I have it right, requires strings.
He always put on a class act, especially the famous concert in New York when, among many other pieces, he presented George Gershwin's "Rhapsody In Blue." Whiteman's group lasted from the teens right up until the mid-1940's or 1950's.
