Blue Cliff Record - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Blue Cliff Record (Chinese: 《碧巖錄》 Bìyán Lù; Japanese: Hekiganroku) is a collection of Zen Buddhist koans originally compiled in China during the Song dynasty in 1125 (宋宣和七年) and then expanded into its present form by the Chan master Yuanwu Keqin (圜悟克勤 1063–1135).
Xuedou selected 82 of these from the Jingde Chuandeng Lu 《景德傳燈錄》 (Jingde (era) Record of the Transmission of the Lamp), with the remainder selected from the Yunmen Guanglu 《雲門廣録》 (Extensive Record of Yunmen Wenyan (864–949).
Oral tradition holds that Dahui noticed students engaged in too much intellectual discourse on koans, and then burned the wooden blocks used to print the Bìyán Lù.

The music of Blue Mountain, as the band’s name suggests, is the beautiful, kick-ass, half-breed child of North Mississippi country blues and old mountain songs carried to Appalachia from the British Isles.
And as Roadrunner and Blue Mountain were parting ways, singer/guitarist Cary Hudson and guitarist/bassist Laurie Stirratt (the sister of Wilco bassist John Stirratt) came to the end of their marriage.
Blue Mountain's souped-up electric-blues stomp and Fulks's upright-bass-driven two-step offer quite different takes on the country classics, but the Carlisle connection reminds us that they're linked by a tradition that roots musicians can always return to for inspiration, regardless of the industry flavor-of-the-month.

Secrets of the Blue Cliff Records book review
Cleary notes in his introduction that the original text of the Blue Cliff Record runs to over 550 pages in English translation while the comments by Tenkei would be over 1000 pages in translation and Hakuin’s commentaries would add another 900 pages.
As this is a compilation of writings not only of parts of the original Blue Cliff Record, but expositions by two Japanese masters, Cleary has used Japanese names throughout the text rather than the Wade-Giles Chinese used in the earlier translation.
It was from these talks that a compilation was made by an unknown associate, Secret Commentary on the Blue Cliff Record, and kept hidden until a lay devotee made a copy.

Master Dogen’s Shinji Shobogenzo: 301 Koan Stories book review
For many years the authenticity of Shenji Shobogenzo was in doubt, but with the discovery in Kanagawa in 1934 of one volume of this collection, which has been dated at 1288, just 35 years after Dogen’s death in 1253, most scholars now accept the Shenji Shobogenzo as an authentic Dogen work.
For example, on the koan "A Dialogue of Manjusri and Wu Chu", Blue Cliff Record #35, the final line by Manjusri "… three in front and three-and-three behind" was, according to Nishijima "a very common expression in Buddhism in China, used to illustrate a concrete and particular situation.
It is difficult to criticise the translations as Dogen’s record varied from some of the more familiar existing English translations.

Case 86 of the Blue Cliff Record
Zen Master Dogen said, "Buddha light does not mean blue, yellow, red, or white light." It means the great original light in which plants, trees, and land are perpetually shining.
In Buddhism we use the word "enlightenment," and in Zen, sometimes, light is used as a metaphor for Buddha Nature or Original Face.
Dogen’s disciple Keizan wrote The Record of Transmitting the Light, which is a record of the enlightenment stories of the first fifty-two ancestors in our lineage, beginning with Shakyamuni Buddha and going through Dogen’s disciple Koun Ejo.
