BeOS PE could be started from within Microsoft Windows or Linux, and was intended to nurture consumer interest in its product and give developers something with which they could tinker.
An Easter egg in the OS allowed changing the title bar look-and-feel to a few others (Mac OS 8, Amiga, and Windows 98 appearances) and in Dano, this had been extended to be a feature allowing changing of the title bar and scroll bars.
The plain BeOS R5 GUI is commonly cloned, either as the main UI, such as in TriangleOS, or as a theme, such as for GNOME.

Unfortunately, BeOS PE and BeIA proved to be too little too late, and in 2001 Be's intellectual property was sold to Palm, Inc. BeOS R5 is considered the last official version, but BeOS R6 (codename: Dano), which was under development before Be's sale to Palm, was leaked to the public shortly after the company's demise.
BeOS was well loved by many people, and the BeOS user base was disappointed when Be, Inc. failed commercially and no further enhancement of the operating system would be possible.

Initially designed to run on AT&T Hobbit-based hardware, BeOS was later modified to run on PowerPC-based processors: first Be's own systems, later Apple's PReP and CHRP platforms, with the hope that Apple Computer would purchase or license BeOS as a replacement for its then aging Mac OS.

The OS was very basic at first, but evolved over time, gaining a reputation as "the media OS" due to its multimedia capabilities.
BeOS version 5 PE used to available from Be.com, but since the company's liquidation, the site has been all but shut down.
Don't be afraid to play around with it, the OS is very user friendly, and it's hard to break anything (harder than under a *nix machine, anyway!).

The blue collectors are in a class by themselves when it comes to glazing over at the very thought of their favorite.
I agree that many catalog descriptions of blue and even "pure" blue and "true" blue have to be taken with the same seasoning used on "season-long bloom" (equals "maybe longer than 3 weeks") and "vigorous" (equals "potentially invasive weed") and "refined" (equals "don't expect many flowers from this plant").
Blue mirror is a very nice blue but quickly goes to a slightly purple color as the blooms fade.

BeOS Max 3.0 is basically a BeOS PE with a slightly different theme and bundled with apps.
There are, though, a few open source BeOS clones in development that try to achieve binary compatibility, such as OpenBeOS or Blue Eyed OS.
BeOS is an excellent desktop system, WAY better than Windoze or any Linux distro (but not quite Mac OS X).

B.E.O.S use a modified linux kernel to partially resolve the chicken-and-egg problem with drivers and basic software, but it isn't free (as in speech) and it isn't opensource.
B.E.OS has a lot of potential, tonnes of it with its concept of taking the best from Be OS and Linux.
BEOS is completely closed source, and they seem to be proud of this fact.

Blue Eyed OS, one of the premiere open source BeOS replacements, released their first downloads yesterday, a beta version of their kernel_server.
It can be downloaded from the Blue Eyed OS website.
I think I understand what this is. It's a perverse plot to take BeOS, which is well-known for being responsive, and making it slow and bloated by implementing it using Linux and X11, those well-known race horses.

Little more than one month has passed after their release of the demo CD and now, B.E.O.S. updates it's site with fresh news.
The first one released some days later BeFree, a BeOS clone based on the FreeBSD kernel under GPL&LGPL license.

As many of you have probably already heard, it appears Blue Eyed OS is out of the OSBOS game.
What I do hope now that this non-death has gone public via the Haiku mailing list, is that communications between team members does increase, and we still see some of those developers helping out more in Haiku (and possibly vice versa) in the form of code/knowledge sharing and the like.
In fact, according to their news page, they have a new iso on the way based on Knoppix which includes the latest version of their app server and such.

Some seem to think this is a bug fixed version of "Dano" (a late leaked version of BeOS) but there it's more than that with internationalisation being added, themes, transparent clocks and who knows what else.
This is rather different from the Amiga community which these days suffers from at least a vocal minority who are badly split and spew venom at one another.
Blue Eyed OS barely got a mention but it's shown a demo, OBOS is progressing, Zeta looks good and isn't too far off, even the PowerPC folks will have something to be happy about.

There is, however, a BeOS clone based on the Linux kernel, called Blue Eyed OS (http://www.blueeyedos.com/).
September 4th, 2003, 02:42 PM Only some of the OS was held on ROM, this did mean however that (e.g.) you always had a GUI, even from the "Early Startup Menu" (where you could choose another boot device etc.), and some system commands, libraries and devices were always "resident".
