Blue Jam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blue Jam was an ambient radio comedy programme produced by Chris Morris.
In a 'sketch' commencing approximately thirteen minutes into the sixth episode of Blue Jam, Morris re-edited the Archbishop of Canterbury's speech at Diana, Princess of Wales's funeral to make it appear that he was making inappropriate comments regarding AIDS and the British Royal Family.
Blue Jam was later made for television and broadcast on Channel 4 as Jam.

Blue Jam Sketch Guide: Guardian Interview
Last week's Radio Times billing for Chris Morris's late night/early morning programme, Blue Jam, on Radio 1 read, `Late night ambient vibes with the talent that is Chris Morris'.
Blue Jam is, by turns, a menacing, mischievous, nonsensical, brutally funny stew of sketches, monologues and music, stitched together to create this melancholic wash. You won't have heard anything like it on radio.
Before embarking on another TV series, he'd `want to know I was going to get decent editorial backing.' A third series of Blue Jam has not been discussed and it is much more likely that he will spin off into as yet uncharted journeys and turn up some equally wildly imaginative project.

 Theatre: Blue Jam
Blue Jam is perhaps one of Chris Morris's more inaccessible projects.
But whittling down the entire Blue Jam oeuvre into a shamefully short hour also means that only the best sketches survive, at the expense of some of the more self-indulgent outings.
Although there are a couple of routines here that are baffling in their inclusion - a pointless skit a pub with one customer the most obvious - the show reinforces Morris's reputation as a uniquely talented comedy writer - a fact often forgotten under the barrage of outrage in which he revels.

This would air at midnight on BBC Radio 1, and would be a mixture of music and dark sketch comedy in a Media Barrage-lite style, with everything fading and cross-fading into each other.
Blue Jam was the source for Chris Morris' later projects Jam and Jaaaaam, as well as his short film My Wrongs 8245-8249 and 117 and his series of columns in the Observer newspaper credited to "Richard Geefe", Time To Go.
While Jam is my favorite iteration of this project, Blue Jam does show off Morris' great taste in music and can be listened to both for the hilarious sketches as well as for being turned on to some cool music.

Part of the issue here, I think, is that the Blue Jam sketches are designed to work on a much more basic psychological level than most comedy.
Warp Records released a Blue Jam cd that was a sort of "best of" compilation thing, still with the ambient music behind the sketches, but not with the interstitial music, and it's an entirely different experience.
I was already a fan of Morris when I downloaded the Blue Jam episodes, I had a fair good idea what to expect, and I wasn't paying it my full attention: so there was just this general creepy vibe, and on each subsequent listen I got a bit more into it.

Be it the way in which it is presented (this is no ordinary sketch show) or the taboo issues it deals with; Blue Jam will equally confuse, bemuse, humour, shock and revolt you all in the space of 30 mins.
The other thing you will notice about Jam is that there is no advertising breaks (very strange for a 30 min programme on Channel 4) which helps add a further level of timelessness and isolationism about the programme.

 NME.COM - Reviews - Blue Jam
Only a fool would pretend to understand Chris Morris completely, but you don't have to squint too hard at the world to see his parallel universe poking through at the weakest points.
'Blue Jam', a collection of 'sketches' from the only Radio 1 show ever designed to sound like influenza, is about the things that happen when sentimentality and 'feeling' obliterates reality and thinking, when hypocrisy reigns and the taboo is just another lifestyle choice for the toxically jaded.
There's little doubt this is the work of a man fascinated by the perverse in a distinctly under-the-counter way, who takes an almost sexual pleasure in appalling the moral majority (the Broadcasting Standards Authority have just found the TV Jam "unacceptable"), yet the overwhelming sense is of misanthropy borne from righteous disgust.

Over time, PBJ developed an open stage attitude and became known for free-form jamming with special guest musicians which gave the band plenty of opportunity to jam with some great musicians from all over the world.
Though having expanded their repetoire and jamming ability, the blues-stigma remained with the band, and they continued to play in blues clubs, sports bars and pubs, staying away from the A-circuit rock 'n' roll venues.
In 1994, Pitch Blue Jam celebrated their anniversary at the Hard Rock Café and released their first CD, O-Town.

With Jam, the TV follow-up to his Radio 1 series Blue Jam, Chris Morris focuses more on unease more than the satire of Brass Eye.
The repetition of the same, small cast over and over, broken up too briefly by Morris' own appearances (as a "country gentleman" living outside his house, for instance), coupled with the gruelling treatment of the sketch material makes for a psyche-probing, jaw-dropping experience--but in parts also a nullifying and strangely predictable one.
The sound mix is particularly crisp and disturbing, the distorted visuals crystal-clear and the overall atmosphere of vague unease that watching Jam first time round brought about is amplified many times by the superb presentation.

This is a well-constructed, deftly acted show that reminds us that Morris is no mere scandal-monger but a writer of coruscating comedy that manages to be brutally funny, desperately sad and utterly bewildering at once.
Kirsty Housley directs the multimedia production with a sure hand and, in a strong ensemble, Jasper Holmes shines as a man who wanders the streets innocently carrying a metal object that just happens to be a gun.
These sketches have already been performed on the radio or in Morris's Jam TV series last year; seeing them in the theatre adds nothing, but reminds us how much we would be missing if Morris were ever taken off the air.
