Mitchell had only a modest technique, about which he was unduly selfconscious--he had a great personal sound on his instrument, and is one of the most unmistakeable players of the period.
Mitchell's limitations are exposed a bit over the course of the album--he is not a widely expressive player, and he often resorts to repeated licks (astonishingly, the banal "Country Gardens" bop quote crops up 3 times in the space of the album's 41 minutes).
blue mitchell was a great, lost trumpeter of the 60s hardbop movement, falling in the shadow of miles and even his blue note stablemates, lee morgan, donald byrd, and freddie hubbard.

Blue Mitchell, as a trumpeter and leader, produces jazz that is ultimately infectious, fully flavored with "funk," "soul" and "swing," but devoid of all pretentiousness.
Blue's first actual jazz recording date came back in 1952 when he was called into a set led by Lou Donaldson, featuring Art Blakey, Percy Heath and Horace Silver.
Mitchell then returned to popular music, recording soul-jazz albums (1967-69) and touring with Ray Charles (1969-71) and the blues-rock bandleader John Mayall (1971-73).

Although Blue has similarities with the product of other female singer songwriters like Laura Nyro, Carole King and Judy Collins, it exists in its own bleak universe, a snapshot of one woman's life as her soul makes a journey from chronic unhappiness to personal rebirth.
Track five, the very Laura Nyro-Carole King sounding jazzy piano ballad "Blue" is rumoured to have been written as a thank you letter to James Taylor for pulling her from her despair.
It also seems to be a warning to "Blue" not to fall prey to the way their peers are living: "You can make it through these waves/Acid, Booze and Ass/Needles guns and Grass/lots of laughs" Overall its got the bruised feel of a Billie Holiday classic.

A native of Florida, he started touring in the early '50s with the R&B bands of Paul Williams, Earl Bostic and Chuck Willis before returning to Miami where he attracted the attention of Cannonball Adderley, who introduced him to Riverside and with whom he recorded "A Portrait of Cannonball" in 1958.
