Topic: Blue Moon (album)

In the News (Mon 28 May 12)

Blue - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month, the third full moon in a season that has four, or a moon that appears blue because of particles in the atmosphere.
Blue is associated with many air forces and navies from the color of their dress uniforms, navy blue for the latter.
Blue is used to represent the Union in the American Civil War in opposition to the Confederate grey, both based on the uniforms worn by the respective armies (although uniforms remained non-standard thoughout the war and sometimes the colors were switched).

Blue (from Old High German "blao" shining) is one of the three primary additive colors; blue light has the shortest wavelength (about 470 nm) of the three primary colours.
Blue is used to represent the Union in the American Civil War in opposition to the Confederate gray, both based on the uniforms worn by the respective armies.
Traditionally, blue has been considered as a primary color in painting, with the secondary colour orange as its complement, but this is not consistent with modern scientific color theory.

 John Fogerty
His first move was an intelligent one - a full album of blues, country and gospel covers couldn't hurt his reputation at all, particularly since he didn't invite his former pals to sing along on it.
A live album taken from John's 1997/8 tour promoting Blue Moon Swamp, it is split into two more or less equal parts - the CCR classics you all know by heart and the obscure rarities nobody knows because John didn't have Stu or Doug behind his shoulders to support him on these ones.
The album opener is 'Born On The Bayou'; this probably means that John still regards himself as the legal inheritor for CCR (it was the band's standard set opener); notice, by the way, the funny introduction with swamp sounds and frog croakings.

Moon Safari, the first album proper by this pair of middle-class Frenchmen, easily survives unscathed from its billing as that most deadly of sub-genres: dinner party music.
True, Moon Safari, with its blatant bliss-provoking easy listening chimes, sits well beside Everything But the Girl's Walking Wounded or Portishead's Dummy, but the album is steeped in too much musical verve and gallic humour to become as dull as Chardonnay.
Transporting you for the length of the album into a mellow chilled out mood Moon Safari is a masterpiece and i recommend it to anyone wanting to expand their music collection.

 Moon Songs and Lyrics
Musicians and Songwriters have invoked the Moon's charms for ages on end, from Gregorian chants to folk songs, medieval ballads and carols to the twentieth century compositions of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Eric Clapton.
The Moon's symbology blazes on in the Moon songs this century, from the chaste and heavenly romantic themes of the earlier part of the century to the hauntings sung from the darker side of the Moon, in such later period songs as Pink Floyd's, "Lunatic," from their "Dark Side of the Moon" album.
The oldest recorded Moon song of this century and the most popularized of all Moon songs is "Shine On Harvest Moon," written in 1903 by Nora Bayes and Jack Norworth.

Twelve years and 12 albums in, Toby Keith's run as a country singer, songwriter, musician and entertainer is entering a new phase.
The album eventually surpassed four million in sales, and the national furor over Keith's patriotic anthem cemented his place not only as the genre's top superstar, but also as a household name.
Honkytonk University is perhaps best described as a career album, in the sense that only a performer as accomplished and artistically mature as Keith could both acknowledge his past and look to the future in one cohesive release.

 Jandek: Discography
The usual lyrical motifs of the blues are all over the place, including women, roads, death, and even janitors, which in my tweaked view of the universe hearkens back to Howlin’ Wolf’s paean to a custodian on his last record ca.
“This album showcases two sides to Jandek — the comedically emphatic avant-blues from the “Jandek band” (with vocal appearances from the woman known as Nancy and the intrusion of percussive splutter which may be indicative of a third party) and the solitary arrangements for Jandek and his guitar.
The former is a deliberate slop of off-kilter blues progressions, the aforementioned arrhythmic drums, and oblique duets between Jandek and Nancy...

In 1985, Fogerty's album "Centerfield" shocked the industry by becoming a #1 album on the charts helping Fogerty mark a an incredible comeback.
At the same time, the music industry seemed ripe for another Fogerty album - this is because 80s music was clearly moving away from synth-pop to a more natural sound (which was a trademark of Fogerty's).
Up until this song, Fogerty had really been the star of this album (after all it's his album), but on this album the background vocalists of Bobby King, Willie Green Jr, and Terry Evans make this one terrific track.

The remastering on this disc and its detailed, well-written liner notes may interest hardcore fans who already own the whole BOC catalogue--this is the only place that you can get a remastered version of the classic "Joan Crawford," for example, which was why I bought the disc.
Other than listening "(Don't Fear) the Reaper" in a Columbia Rock classic's album, I was never into the Blue Oyster Cult band until I bought this compilation of best hits, which needless to say, remains a fair enough entrance to the band for first-time listeners.
I have checked the reviews that have not given this album enough credits to merit a five star, yet I would say it is good enough to introduce you to this often underrated band.

Eric Clapton delivers a rather un-Clapton-like guitar solo on "Blue Moon" and Stevie Wonder blows harp like he means it on "What a Wonderful World," but it is the duets--"Baby It's Cold Outside" with the unsinkable Dolly Parton and "Manhattan" with the indomitable Bette Midler--that the dazzle most.
Stevie is not a Wonder on "What a Wonderful World" nor does Clapton do much to help with "Blue Moon." Bette Miler whom I always felt could sing the telephone book and make it enjoyable suffers from the same blandness that Rod does and phones in her lyrics.
Verdict: this album is very dull and dry and the CD would be put to better use as a coaster.

52-year-old Fogerty reviving music career after 11-year absence   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
This week, Fogerty finally ends his second hibernation by releasing the typically rootsy album ''Blue Moon Swamp,'' his first since 1986's ''Eye of the Zombie.'' At the same time, he begins his first tour in more than a decade, in which he'll perform more Creedence hits than he has in more than 20 years.
The gravel-voiced singer says his second marriage ''had a huge influence on the new album.'' It must have, since it inspired Fogerty to write the first love song of his career (''Joy of My Life'').
In talking more deeply with Fogerty, however, it becomes clear the new album's long gestation also has much to do with a long-running feud.
