Blue Period - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Blue Period of Picasso, between 1901 and 1904, was when the style of Pablo Picasso's paintings were heavily emotional, often in the form of blue colors like Dama en Eden Concert (1903), La Vida (1903), Las dos hermanas (1904).
His Blue Period paintings are now some of his most popular works, although he had difficulty selling them after he painted them.
Some have speculated that his decision to use monochrome blue colors was because of the suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas in 1901, or because early in his career when he was poor he could not afford to buy many colors to paint with.

"Blue dominated Picasso's palette and hence the mood of his subjects from the end of 1901 until late 1904.
Thus it relates Picasso's work in these years to late nineteenth-century art more than to contemporary explorations of color such as in the work of the painters then gathering around Matisse, who were soon to be known as Fauves.
A number of Cezanne's later pictures, which were also painted in gradations of blue, have affinities with Symbolist painting and even more closely anticipate Picasso, insofar as some were portraits and figure pictures while the Whistlers and Monets were largely uninhabited landscapes.

 Pablo Picasso Blue Period
The blue period is a marvelous expression of poetic subtlety and personal melancholy and contributes to the transition of Picasso's style from classicism to abstract art.
Inspired by a tradition that had grown suspicious of classicism, the blue period marks the end of a development in which the young Pablo Picasso is trying to formulate his pictorial means that solve the problems and limitations of classicism and would eventually culminate in cubism and the first steps towards modern abstract art.
In fact, it lasted until the end of his cubist period (which followed the rose period) and only in the period thereafter, which was his neo-classicist period, did Picasso's work begin the show the playfulness that would remain a prominent feature of his work for the rest of his life.

The reason that this period of Picasso's work is called the blue period is rather obvious to the viewer.
The paintings of this period express great emotional and psychlogical feeling, and this is due in part to the psychological powers that the color blue holds, and also Picasso's extroardinary ability to express emotion with his paint.

When NYPD Blue premiered in September 1993, it became an instant hit and nabbed 27 Emmy nominations in its first season, but it was also a lightning rod for controversy, thanks to salty language, bare butts, boobs and some of the very un-PC viewpoints of Dennis Franz's crabby, but ultimately endearing, Detective Andy Sipowicz.

In fact, Bochco says one of the reasons he decided to end the show this season was to ensure that it would have a series finale, since it was in danger of cancellation by the network.
