She was (and still is) the largest ocean liner built in the United States and the fasted ocean liner ever built.
She immediately set transatalantic speed records, capturing the Blue Riband from the Queen Mary.
But competition from airliners brought the glory days to an end; in 1964 America was sold to Chandris Line, and United States was withdrawn from service in 1969.

It is sufficient to say that I.M.M bought White Star as a means of removing Cunard (a wholly owned British company that was backed by the British government with low fixed interest loans) from the supremacy of holding the Blue Riband which was the transatlantic speed record held by Cunard for over 20 years.
Cunard built ships that were of battleship design as far as watertight subdivision is concerned and the Mauretania also had a high sheer- or lift- to her bows and when she steamed into heavy seas the water was thrown aside.
Most people of the time believed the Titanic to be British but in fact she was not and far from crushing Cunard the standard bearer of Britain on the Atlantic run and holders of the Blue Riband.

 SS Normandie
She seemed like a little chunk of France herself and was the second ship to have an outdoor swimming pool.
(The Italian liner Rex was the first.) On the Normandie's maiden voyage she became the Blue Riband holder, the world's fastest ship, beating the Rex.
Her interiors were marvels of Art Deco and the Streamline style.
