Blue Wizards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien, the Blue Wizards (or the Ithryn Luin) are two notoriously mysterious characters of Middle-earth.
And it is here said that the Wizards far from failed; rather, they had a pivotal role in the victories of the West at the end of both the Second and the Third Ages.
Like most names in Tolkien's works, the names of the Blue Wizards are significant.

Wizards (Middle-earth) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tolkien, the Wizards of Middle-earth are a small group of beings outwardly resembling Men but possessing much greater physical and mental power.
The Istari also carried staves, which seem to be tied to their ability to wield magic; when Saruman is defeated at Isengard, Gandalf in the same breath casts him from the White Council and breaks his staff.
In spite of their specific and unambiguous goal, the Wizards are nevertheless capable of human feelings; thus Gandalf feels great affection for the Hobbits.

The Blue Wizards | Lord of the Rings Fanatics Library   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
The Blue Wizards arrived in the Second Age, around the year 1600 to aid in the wars against Sauron.
The Blue Wizards are said to have come with him to Middle-earth, but again, they were not sent to bolster Elrond's forces, but rather to weaken Sauron's, to disestablish his influence in the East.
That this contradicts such statements as Gandalf being the only Wizard to remain faithful is clear, however, statements such as these are given at time when earlier ideas of the Blue Wizards were in consideration, and were not published in Tolkien's lifetime.

 Early Fourth Age
Some people have begun to accept as "canon" that the Blue Wizards actually appeared in Middle-earth during the Second Age, and that they failed in their missions, or that they were active against Sauron in the Third Age and helped restrain his might by fomenting rebellions in the east.
Tolkien's fear that the Blue Wizards may have founded cults of magic was expressed in a letter in 1958.
The idea that the Blue Wizards may have arrived earlier than the others was developed late in Tolkien's life, after he had abandoned work on The New Shadow.

The Towers of High Magery   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
All wizards are familiar with the schools of magery - they are the places where most budding apprentices first cast the Detect Magic cantrip, and they are the places eager young wizards return to, to be taught the most potent of glyphs in exchange for a small grull fee.
To this end, they ask each and every wizard, no matter how untrained, to give their details to the towers, such that after sufficient time has passed and enough entries submitted one wizard of each colour may be appointed to be High Magi of that colour.
Any wizard who chooses to align themselves to the Towers of High Magery should be aware that it will be possible, at any time, for any four members of the Council of High Magi to agree and instantly send the death of magic to a wizard who has so aligned themselves.

"Wizard is a translation of Quenya istar (Sindarin ithron): one of the members of an "order" (as they call it), claiming to possess, and exhibiting, eminent knowledge of the history and nature the World."(ibid.)
In short, the conclusions that can safely be drawn from an attentive reading of the istari essays would be that the order of the Heren Istarion consisted of the five Wizards we know, and that it only came into being with their mission, and ceased to exist with the passing of Saruman at the latest.
The existance of the blue wizards was actually only known to the other three.

It is said that the Blue Wizards went far into the east of Rhun and beyond to stir up rebellions against Sauron in the lands he held sway over, though the tales of these struggles never reached the west in detail.
Tolkien did state that many of the "magic cults" and orders that exist today can trace their origins back to the Blue Wizards teaching local peoples of the east the magical arts.

Allatar and Pallando were called the Blue Wizards because they wore blue robes; the other three wizards ("istari") were Gandalf the grey (later white), Saruman the white (later the colourful) and Radagast the brown.

Some of the Maiar came to Middle-earth instead of staying in the land of gods; these are for example Sauron, the Balrog, the five Wizards, Melian or also Osse who often spent his time at the shores of the sea.
