NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Blue at the Mizzen (novel)
Blue at the Mizzen (1999) is a novel by Patrick O'Brian, the twentieth (and final) book in the Aubrey–Maturin series.
The novel is experimental in that it is not a tale of identifying the killers—they have openly announced their intentions—but is instead a description of how and why the bystanders and participants handle their parts in the crime.
In its general form, the novel of manners is concerned with subtle nuances of behavior and standards of correctness, usually in upper-class life.

O’Brian’s novels are set during the Napoleonic Wars (1799-1815), when French leader Napoleon I waged war on much of the rest of Europe.
Experimental novels can be challenging to read because they represent reality in unusual ways, but they also demonstrate one of the novel’s greatest strengths—its ability to encompass an almost endless variety of approaches.

BookPage Fiction Review: Blue at the Mizzen
REVIEW BY J.W. Patrick O'Brian's publisher is saying Blue at the Mizzen may be the last in his superb series of historical fiction, and we can only hope that is not so.
Still, we have to admit that it could not last forever.
After all, O'Brian is well into his eighties, and the subject matter -- the Napoleonic wars -- has, with this 20th novel, come finally to an end, with Napoleon safely on St. Helena and Aubrey and Maturin fomenting revolution in Chile and sailing the frigid seas off Cape Horn.

"Blue at the Mizzen" is an intricate, multifaceted work, one of those rare novels that actually bear up under close scrutiny.
Every novel is typified by literary and classical allusions, linguistic jokes, historical references and, most important, O'Brian's ability to weave 18th-century cadences into his writing without sacrificing modern usage.
