The Blue-bellied Roller is a large bird, nearly the size of a (Common black-and-gray Eurasian bird noted for thievery) Jackdaw at 28-30 cm.
These rollers often perch prominently on trees, posts or overhead wires, like giant (Any of numerous Old World birds having a strong hooked bill that feed on smaller animals) shrikes, whilst watching for the (Terrestrial plant-eating insect with hind legs adapted for leaping) grasshoppers and other large (Small air-breathing arthropod) insects on which they feed.

I must admit that this was not a total bust, as I learned that the "True Rollers" are loosely related to Kingfishers and Kookaburras and were grouped together not only because of some very boring bone structure reasons, but also because of how they earned their name.

Coming in to drink were thousands of doves (Vinaceous, Collared, Namaqua and the odd Black-billed Wood Dove), dozens of Abyssinian Rollers and Greater Blue-eared Starlings as well as scores of White-throated Bee-eaters, Brown-headed and Common Sand Martins hawking insects above the water.
A mixed flock of African Green Pigeons and Splendid Glossy Starlings feasted on a fruiting treetop nearby and a Broad-billed Roller hawked moths from the end of a snag in the distance.
It was evident that Waza NP was undergoing a severe drought and that a lot of the aquatic or flooded grassland species were absent.

Along the road we added Blue-bellied, Rufous-crowned and Abyssinian Rollers, which were all very common and seen on wires and trees beside the road, as well as Black Kite and Black-shouldered Kite, the latter posed for photographs.
During breakfast Yaya came to find us as he was due to take some birders to Pirang, all but one had dropped out due to ‘Banjul belly’ so instead of the lazy ramble around Fajara golf course and the Kotu area we joined in with the morning trip.
I was a little concerned as the main purpose of this trip was bird photography which requires more time than general ‘number crunch’ birding, however it turned out to be quite productive in both aspects.

The birds that I really wanted good images of were the Rollers and they did not disappoint, Abyssinian and Blue-Bellied showed well, stooping down from their high vantage points to feed on a the large insects and small lizards that were all around, these birds are even more stunningly colourful in flight.
The area was very rich in birds, many we had only fleeting glimpses of and failed to positively I/D but there were Warblers, Weavers and Crombecs etc, see the list at the bottom of the page.
