Bluetongue disease - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bluetongue disease (also called catarrhal fever) is a non-contagious, arthropod-borne viral disease of ruminants, mainly sheep and less frequently of cattle, goats, buffalo, deer, dromedaries and antelope.
Major signs are high fever, excessive salivation, swelling of the face and tongue and cyanosis of the tongue.
Although the tongues of human patients with some types of heart disease may be blue, this sign is not related to bluetongue disease.

The tongue is a mass of striated muscle tissue intermingled with glands and fat that is encased in a mucus membrane and located along the floor of the mouth.
The long, flexible tongues belonging to anteaters and lizards, for instance, are important for capturing prey, whereas the tongue of a dog is critical in heat regulation and cats commonly use their tongues for grooming.
The tongue’s appearance is often an indicator of health, and there is a long history of diagnostic observation of the organ.

Secondary Raynaud's disease is the same as primary Raynaud's disease, but occurs in individuals with a predisposing factor, usually a form of collagen vascular disease.
The affected fingers or toes (in rare instances, the tip of the nose or tongue) become pale and white because they are deprived of blood and, thus, oxygen.
Because episodes of Raynaud's disease have also been associated with stress and emotional upset, the condition may be improved by learning to manage stress.

A recent pilot study investigating the causes of infectious intestinal disease in England based on surveillance in GP practices showed that astroviruses were the most frequent viral cause (Roderick et al, Epidemiol Infect 1995:114: 277-288).
Because of the magnitude of disease associated with rotavirus infections and because public health interventions to provide clean water and improved sanitation are unlikely to decrease the incidence of disease, vaccines are being developed as the first strategy for prevention.
One explanation may be disease caused by VP7 serotypes not covered by current vaccine candidates, alternatively the lack of incorporation of a human P type in the tetravalent rhesus rotavirus vaccine.
