Water - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Water (from the Old English word wæter; c.f German "Wasser", from PIE *wod-or, "water") is a tasteless, odorless, and nearly colorless (it has a slight hint of blue) substance in its pure form that is essential to all known forms of life and is known also as the most universal solvent.
Water is a very good solvent, chemically not unlike ammonia, and dissolves many types of substances, such as various salts and sugar, and facilitates their chemical interaction, which aids complex metabolisms.
Polluting water may be the biggest single misuse of water; to the extent that a pollutant limits other uses of the water, it becomes a waste of the resource, regardless of benefits to the pollutor.

Molecular vibration and absorption of water molecules   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Variations in the environment around each liquid water molecule gives rise to considerable line broadening with vibration shifts in a hydrogen-bond-donating water molecule being greater than in a hydrogen-bond accepting molecule but both acting in the same direction [679], and accumulating with the number of hydrogen bonds.
In liquid water the molecular stretch vibrations shift to higher frequency, on raising the temperature (as hydrogen bonding weakens, the covalent O-H bonds strengthen causing them to vibrate at higher frequencies) whereas the intramolecular vibrations shift to lower frequencies and the molecular bend vibration peak both shifts to lower frequencies and becomes narrower [696].
The sky is blue due to molecular light scattering, with neither tiny air-borne particles nor its small and variable content of gaseous water having significant effect [710].

Water is unique among the molecules of nature in its high concentration of OH bonds and in its plentiful supply.
However, water and ice are the only two chemical substances we normally have the opportunity to observe in pure form in sufficiently large bulk so that a weak coloration becomes detectable.

 WHY IS WATER BLUE
Because the absorption which gives water its color is in the red end of the visible spectrum, one sees blue, the complementary color of red, when observing light that has passed through several meters of water.
To our knowledge the intrinsic blueness of water is the only example from nature in which color originates from vibrational transitions.
However, the changes are small enough that the color of water should not vary significantly with temperature between 0 and 50º C. e are not the first to call attention to the vibrational origin of water's blue color.
