It is from the hasty impressionist sketches in her letters that we gather the significance of the movement.
From the somewhat elusive references to the bluestocking parties, we gather that—unlike the Parisian salons—there was not a fixed day or date for any of the meetings.
These were the principal bluestocking hostesses, to whom came “the elite of London both for talent and fashion.” Since the first conversation had been given by Mrs.

More than just a bookstore, Bluestockings serves as a community space where, as Comstock explains, “women, people of transgendered experience and feminist-minded people can come together and find literature, music, art and activism from their perspective.” Here, Comstock tells Satya about the philosophy and communities that keep the store flourishing.
Our collective/volunteer structure and day-to-day decisions are informed by many philosophies and ideas including, but not limited to: feminism/womanism, anti-white supremacy, equality, shared work, collectivism, anarchy, anti-hierarchy, empowering and supporting others—rather than capitalism and competitiveness—and awareness and education relating to issues concerning women, the environment, and social justice.

The Bluestockings, a pejorative name for an informal woman's literary "club" that flourished in the second half of eighteenth century London, was named after Benjamin Stillingfleet's blue worsted stockings: he was too poor to afford the customary fl silk stocking suitable for evening wear.
Run by educated, intellectual, conservative women who tried to raise the moral, intellectual, and cultural standards of their time, this group of friends took turns hosting evening's entertainment where the literary figures of London took the spotlight.
Some of the leading female intellects and writers of the age were numbered among the Bluestockings.

Wool Works: the blue sock story
Word history: The term bluestocking seems always to have been one of contempt and derision, for it originally signified one who was informally and unfashionably dressed in blue worsted rather than fl silk stockings.
As the term bluestocking associated with the women who held salons and who put their energies and emotions into work with each other, it became a term of abuse, with connotations of snob and misfit.
The bluestockings, excluded from politics, law, education and employment because they were female, formed an alternative, knowledgeable, supportive, competent and intellectually self-sufficient group.
