DVD Review - Blues Brothers 2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
One of the nice things about "Blues Brothers 2000" is that the time in the story has progressed for 18 years; it does not attempt to pretend that nothing has happened in that time.
Blues, rhythm & blues, and soul are the heritage of fl people and as such, should be celebrated and represented mostly by them.
If you can face that the "Blues Brothers" cult of the original cannot be topped or re-created, and if you can accept that the character of Elwood Blues changed in the past 18 years, I am sure you will enjoy this film as much as I did, and turn on the good vibes.

The Blues Brothers, were first created by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd in the early 1970s in Toronto, Canada.

Not only was that 1980 flick unfunny (John Belushi was too jacked on drugs at the time to do more than grunt and grimace), but it reduced one of the most powerful legacies of African-American culture to a caricature -- those goddamned fedoras and sunglasses.
But Blues Brothers 2000 is a modern shocker: a musical-comedy that actually works.
The visual humor's not bad at all, including a car crash that's a parody of Hollywood action-movie excess (and the first Blues Brothers picture).

I have to confess a certain indifference to the Blues Brothers, both on Saturday Night Live and in their first movie -- I always thought the Festrunk brothers would've made better heroes for an SNL comedy.
The first Blues Brothers, directed by John Landis and starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, was little more than a string of great musical numbers and endless car wrecks; it set the stage for Hollywood blockbusters as we know them today -- plotless, senseless, self-indulgent mayhem, a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.
