In a way, Blues for the Red Sun might be the mother of all stoner-albums, the first example in a genre that contained all the ingredients that are usually mentioned in its context.

Hugely important and still a classic of the genre, Blues for the Red Sun is one of those albums that should be heard as loud as possible.

Its really fucking heavy, as I mentioned.....Homme tunes down to C and plays through a bass amp for maximum rumble factor, the result was my jaw hitting the floor when the guitars on opener "Thumb" slam into gear.
It isnt really noticeable as the songs no longer flow seamlessly into each other as on "Blues...", but subconsciously you find yourself dividing the album into its imaginary sections, which does have the curious effect of hitching up that replay factor.
Its tricky to decide wether to plump for "Blues..." or "Sky Valley" as your Kyuss introduction...buuuuut, Kyuss albums are generally available cheapish through whatever mid price range Elektra/Sony are currently running.

Producer Chris Goss masterfully captures the band's unique heavy / light formula, which becomes apparent as soon as the gentle but sinister intro melody gives way to the chugging main riff in the opener "Thumb." This segues immediately into the galloping "Green Machine," which...

 KYUSS' NEWEST A THROWBACK TO '70S   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-20)
After releasing 1992's critically hailed ``Blues for the Red Sun,'' the SoCal metallers lost their drummer, bassist and record label.
A suite in three parts that comes with the instruction ``Listen without distraction,'' the new disc is a throwback to the '70s heyday of concept albums and wooly mammoth metal.
Kyuss was born in the late '80s when vocalist John Garcia, guitarist Josh Homme, drummer Brant Bjork and bassist Nick Oliveri merged their metal and punk influences to play ``generator jams'' - a few kegs, a few friends and a power generator under the stars - in the desert east of Los Angeles.

 TrouserPress.com :: Kyuss
Kyuss found itself through the agency of Chris Goss, the Masters of Reality vocalist whose affinity for droning fuzz-riffs, floorboard-rattling bass and skull-shattering cymbals proved a perfect fit on the three Kyuss albums he produced.
On Blues for the Red Sun, Goss tapped into Kyuss' hidden reserve of nitrous oxide, resulting in a sound that's like speed-metal only without the speed, summoning visions of a flared tailpipe spewing exhaust fumes.
The ferocious "Thumb" and the droning instrumental "Apothecaries' Weight" show Kyuss equally potent at playing hard and soft; though the album does drag a bit toward the end, it's one of the most gratifying blasts of volume this decade has yet produced.

A bit grunge, a bit metal and a whole lotta rock and roll, 1992's Blues for the Red Sun may well be the finest album by short-lived rock gods Kyuss.
When they do achieve full rock bliss, they do so unrelentlessly--"Green Machine" practically thrashes out for an atypical (for Kyuss, at least) three-and-a-half minutes.
Updating Black Sabbath's heaviness by way of Arizona desert psychedelia and epic jams, Blues for the Red Sun established the blueprint for the entire "stoner rock" movement.
