The population of Dartford boomed from 2,406 in 1801 to 18,643 in 1901.
Dartford was a dirty place during the early 19th century, and in 1814 an act for improving the town was passed.
In 1979 Dartford was surrounded on all sides: the River Thames to the north, Green Belt (land unavailable for urbanisation to limit London's growth) to the South, Chalk quarries to the east and Greater London to the West.

Bluewater Shopping Centre is a large out-of-town shopping mall located in Greenhithe in the borough of Dartford, just outside London in north-west Kent.
Bluewater is in direct competition with Lakeside Shopping Centre in Thurrock on the other side of the Thames.
Bluewater used to host a Land Rover experience, but this closed due to a new Fast Track bus route, which roads had to go through the former site.
