GUNS AND BLUING   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Bluing is a process which applies high heat to the external surfaces of a steel gun.
Stainless steel is considerably stronger and harder than steel used in guns before this time.
The Army Colt revolvers of 1913 were issued with a BLUED surface, NOT stainless steel or chrome or silver or gold.

 Gun Bluing
However, the real usefulness of cold bluing is touching up small areas, those little dings or worn spots that aren't bad enough to warrant a complete rebluing but need some coloring to keep them from becoming an embarrassment.
One of the easiest cold blue durability tests is to apply the blue to a piece of steel as per instructions, and then see how well it stands up to brisk rubbing with 000 steel wool.
Some guns, or portions thereof--such as the barrels on some Remington 700 Magnums--are made of stainless steel and are darkened with a plating that gives the appearance of bluing.

 Principal Metals
Steel melted in a furnace with a basic bottom and lining and under a slag containing an excess of a basic substance such as magnesia or lime.
Steel wire bright drawn and annealed in controlled non-oxidizing atmosphere so that surface oxidation is reduced to a minimum and the surface remains relatively bright.
A hardened, tempered, and polished high carbon spring steel strip material (carbon content is generally higher than that of a material used for wood band saw applications) with a Rockwell value of roughly C47/49.

A steel making process wherein oxygen of the highest purity is blown onto the surface of a bath of molten iron contained in a basic lined and ladle shaped vessel.
A steel making process either Bessemer, open hearth or electric, in which the furnace is lined with a basic refractory.
A steel making process in which air is blown through the molten iron so that the impurities are thus removed by oxidation.

Hints - Using Multi-ply Stainless Steel Cookware
When stainless steel is finished, it leaves the manufacturing process with a thin film of machine oil on the surface of the metal.
This darkening, is called "bluing" and is sometimes seen on the exhaust pipes of a motorcycle near the engine.
Multi-Ply stainless steel cookware does not require nearly as much energy to cook your food as other types of cookware because it is designed to use heat efficiently.

 Steel Dictionary - B
Cold-reduced sheet steel, 12-32 inches wide, that serves as the substrate (raw material) to be coated in the tin mill.
Steel processors may offer blanking for their customers to reduce their labor and transportation costs; excess steel can be trimmed prior to shipment.
For example, as a steel processor trims the sides of the sheet steel parallel or cuts a sheet of steel into strips, its edges will bend with the direction of the cut (see Edge Rolling).

 Hardware - Bluing
The steel wool quickly becomes flened (because of the bluing agent), and this leaves an already-deeply-colored liquid on the nickel silver.
I cover the blued part with masking tape and then use waxed dental floss to bind the ferrule taps down, if you use enough floss almost all of the glue is brought to the surface of the floss.
Lastly, the steel is tempered two or three times to return the metal inside to normal "malleability," while the highly carburized (and colored) outer skin remains in its hardened state.

The heat that rises off the burner that you use the cookware on and the heat that radiates from the cookware itself when in use is sufficient to fuse airborne particles to the sides and bottom of your cookware along with any drips, spills or splashes that may accompany them.

Bluing (Arno Hahma; Geoff Kotzar; John DeArmond; Ole-Hjalmar Kristensen)
Mild steel will become almost fl, strongly alloyed steel will be mostly dark blue and hardened high carbon steel mostly dark brown or reddish.
The parts to be blued are immersed in the boiling solution for 5 to 10 minutes (no more or the finish will become reddish).

Many clocks and watches that come into the workshop for repair have blued hands that are not in as good a condition as they could be.
The thinner the metal you are working with or the degree of taper from boss to tip that you are bluing, the greater the difficulty.
By varying the distance of the nozzle from the hand (which is placed on a heat resistant fibre board) it is easy to progress slowly through all of the colours until a nice even blue is obtained.

 Parkerizing - TheBestLinks.com - Parkerize, Aluminum, Manganese, Steel, ...
Parkerizing (sometimes called phosphating) is a method of protecting steel surfaces from corrosion and thus increasing their durability.
It is commonly used on weapons as an alternative to bluing, and is considered more effective than bluing.
It is different from coating the metal—the steel reacts with the zinc and the treated finish is thus part of the metal.

Blued Steel - The bluing process is used to create a protective layer of treated metal on the surface of the sword blade with the goal of reducing rusting and providing an attractive blue coloration.
Keep in mind that bluing is a condition of the surface of the steel and because of this can be damaged or removed by accidental abrasion.
But be careful with the steel wool on engraved or etched swords so that you do not apply so much pressure that you start to wear down the edges of the engraving or etching.

The first method of coloring steel was to allow it to develop a uniform coat of rust, then gently scrub the residue off, rust again, scrub, rust, etc. The metal would darken with each repetition.
Stainless steel is made by replacing some of the carbon in the mix with chromium and other compounds, making the metal more resistant to oxidation.
Bluing is a controlled method of rusting the outer surface of carbon steel.

 Blue Steel Springs
Blue steel springs are the traditional type, as opposed to stainless steel.
Although the bluing does help to prevent rust, it is actually an essential part of the process and is certainly not just a finish.
The colour and degree of tempering will be governed by the steels final use, so knives, for example, would be straw as they need a keen edge, but bend it and it would break (it is harder but also brittle).

The earliest I know of is rust bluing that would have been used to help reduce rusting and also for beauty especially where gold or silver was inlaid into the blade.
An early replacement for bluing is the Parkerized finish developed for the protection of stocks of rolled steel stored in the open, it began to be used early in this century as less expensive and more suitable to rough military finishes than bluing.
While stainless steel was developed about 1910, there was no useful high-carbon stainless available to the knife industry until the 1960s so some makers used plating, like Gerber's hard chrome, to keep rust down.

The main types of bluing we undertake in our workshop are the hot caustic bluing method, traditional rust bluing method and the Nitre Bluing (or Fire Bluing) for small parts.
The Parkerizing process is different from the bluing process (which is essentially a pre-rusting/ oxidising of the steel surface) in that Parkerizing is actually a manganese- phosphate coating that chemically bonds to the surface of the steel.
Parkerizing has long been used as a military coating, and while not being as attractive to some as bluing, it is an excellent choice for hunting guns being far more durable than all of the types of bluing.

The bluing of steel is not a coating or other form of protective film put on the surface of metal.
However, the bluing process itself is the easy part because the quality of the "blue" depends on the quality of the metal surface, not the bluing process itself.
The Belgium Bluing process involves heating the barrels in a boiling water bath (220 deg F.) and then applying a cold caustic rusting solution to the hot steel (in hot bluing you add cold steel to the hot salts, this is just the opposite).

 Run-N-Iron - Premium Finishes
Color Case Hardening is a process for the surface hardening of steel, which results in a decorative mottled-color finish.
To achieve these results, we use the traditional method of packing the component into a steel crucible together with a generous amount of charred bone, wood and leather, then heating the entire unit to a temperature of 1400 degrees F for two hours or more.
A risk with Color Case Hardening is the warping of components during exposure to the extreme heat.
