Tait was born in Whangarei in 1961, and attended Whangarei Boys High School.
By now Tait, based in England fulltime, was showing the Todd-like ability to ride a number of horses successfully and he shone also with Tempo and Delta.
Tait was awarded the Lonsdale Cup by the New Zealand Olympic Committee in 2001.

Robert Blyth Tait (born May 10, 1961 in Whangarei) is a New Zealand equestrian, who has represented New Zealand at four Summer Olympics.
Tait attended Whangarei Boys High School, and was interested in horses from an early age – his father bred race horses – and tried showjumping before specialising in three-day eventing.
Tait was awarded the Lonsdale Cup by the New Zealand Olympic Committee in 2001.

Retired equestrian Blyth Tait has rubbished claims that New Zealand riders and their mounts will be at a disadvantage because of the "softening" of the three-day eventing course.
Tait says the sport has evolved over the years and New Zealand has no distinctive advantage as such.
Remarking on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Tait says while he was satisfied with the world governing body FEI's assessment and approval of the facilities in Hong Kong, it was "less than ideal for our sport but it is part of a bigger thing".

Blyth has ridden the 14-year-old owned by Ewan and Sue Haglund, since their daughter Melissa´s death six years ago.

Chesterfield, who was ridden to a team bronze medal in Atlanta by Blyth Tait, dropped dead from what is believed to be a cardiac arrest during a regular workout in England overnight.
Tait said Chesterfield, who had just turned 16, was one of the best and most honest horses he had ever ridden.
Tait said although he realised that the loss of Chesterfield was difficult for the New Zealand team so close to the Olympics, his real sadness was for the horse itself.

Perfect going at this weekend's Pedigree Burghley Horse Trials should mean an inviting and galloping course, says Blyth Tait, who was speaking just before leaving for the event from his new base near Bedford, just an hour up the A1 from Burghley.
"Everyone is very keen to get a four-star under their belt," says Blyth Tait, in a reference to the cancellation earlier this year of Badminton, Britain's only other four-star event, due to Foot and Mouth restrictions.

When Todd's horse had to be withdrawn from the 1996 competition because of a strained muscle, sustained four days before competition, the replacement horse and rider was the team of Blyth Tait on Ready Teddy, considered too inexperienced for Olympic competition.
