Blythburgh benefited from the commercial activity of the time - from the cloth trade of West Suffolk, from its position on the great medieval road linking London with the east-coast ports and the continent of Europe and from the coastal and fishing trades.
However, ironically, Blythburgh itself was already probably past its most prosperous days when the church was begun, as a result of plague, the wars abroad and the rise of other trading centres on the East Suffolk coast.
On 8 April 1644, he came to Blythburgh and ordered the removal of '20 superstitious pictures, one on the outside of the Church; 2 crosses, one on the Porch and another on the steeple; and 20 cherubim to be taken down in the Church and Chancel...

One day when he was alone, as his mate had gone into the village, he heard the sound of a dog panting very close by him, as if right by his ear, but there was no animal visible.
One winter night between 1978 and 1985, a local policeman was on patrol in his car, going north on the A12 just north of Blythburgh, when suddenly "a huge fl dog as big as a child's pony" dashed across the road in front of him.
It came out of trees on the west wide of the road, and as the man slammed on the brakes, he saw it disappear into the mist of the marshes on the east side.

The first is that Blythburgh, now a tiny village bisected by the fearsome A12 between London and the east coast ports, was once a thriving medieval town.
For my money, Holy Trinity, Blythburgh, is the most significant medieval art object in the county, ranking alongside Salle in Norfolk.
She founded the priory that became Ely Cathedral, and there is a local connection because her father was killed at the Battle of Blythburgh.

The Holy Trinity Church at Blythburgh is very beautiful and of particular interest is its Angel roof, which has the remains of 18 pairs of carved and painted angels suspended from the roof beams.
The famous north door, which has scorch marks upon it that were allegedly caused by the Black Dog that appeared before the congregation in 1577, is directly opposite if you enter the church via the main porch.
As the north door is below the spire, it’s possible that the scorch marks may have been caused by the lightning or the falling spire.
