DPRP - Forgotten Sons: Bo Hansson
Born in Stockholm in 1946, Bo Hansson's musical career took off in the late sixties when he was part of the duo Hansson & Karlsson who released three albums and managed to make a name for themselves on the musical circuit, both at home and in Europe.
Hansson's third album, which according to many music aficionados was his strongest in musical terms, was released in 1973 as Mellnväsen on the Silence Records label (SRS 4625).
With this album Hansson confirmed his maturity as a musical composer, managing to slowly build upon his body of works without losing that feeling of a fairy-tale atmosphere, his trademark sound which was essentially laid down on his debut album.

Bo himself was in the midst of a very creative period, new melodies were constantly popping up in his head, so when Lord of the Rings finally got released in other countries there were already three more tracks added compared to the first Swedish issue.

Bo Hansson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bo Hansson was born on 10 April 1943 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and is a musician best known for his four instrumental albums released in the 1970s.
In 1966, Hansson saw American jazz organist 'Brother' Jack McDuff perform at Stockholm's Gyllene Cirkeln Club, and was so captivated by the performance that he decided to leave The Merrymen to expand his musical horizons.
Hansson retreated to a remote cottage on an island off Stockholm where he, drummer Rune Carlsson and engineer Anders Lind, who had worked previously with Hansson/Karlsson, spent winter 1969 recording what was to become Hansson's debut solo album on a borrowed 4 track recorder.

Bo Hansson's famous debut-album inspired by Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" made him the most successful progressive rock artist from Sweden and Scandinavia as it sold to gold status in both the UK and Australia.
Hansson's third album was for me the culmination of all the promises of the two first albums.
Hansson took all the elements of his signature sound a step further and melted them into far more complex, involving and longer compositions than on the two first albums, with a much better, tighter and more professional sound.

The resulting sound of the 12 impressionistic vignettes was unique, predating both Brian Eno's electro-pop and new age music, mixing folk, classical, jazz and pop one year before Mike Oldfield.

Bo's moog work is instrumental in creating this atmosphere and its warm sounds are utilized to the fullest extent throughout this album.
Hansson is especially drawn to the dark, mysterious aspects of the trilogy.

Hansson and Karlsson (formed in 1966) had been a truly unique phenomenon in Sweden in the late '60's, with music built greatly on improvisation and who employed a heavy organ sound before it was common in progressive rock.
When the '60s ended, and as Hansson and Karlsson were getting big in progressive circles in Europe, their career came to a halt after conflicts between the two and their manager.
Now, Hansson's big commercial and international breakthrough, however, did not come through any of the four albums he released with jazz-drummer Janne "Loffe" Karlsson (later to become a second-rate actor/comedian), but with this album.

Zamla lost their original drummer, Hans Bruniusson, and was replaced by Vilgot Hansson, with the band duly noting in the liner notes "a period of transition," with the music not as "optimistic and happy" as on previous releases.
