Widerberg put his provocative ideas into practice in his first two features, The Pram (1963) and Raven's End (1963), films which sought to capture the freshness and immediacy he so admired in the French New Wave works of Truffaut and Godard and in the New York style of Cassavetes.
Bo Widerberg's stylish first feature represented a bold attempt to infuse the Swedish cinema with some of the freshness and immediacy the young filmmaker so admired in the films of Godard, Truffaut, and Cassavetes.
Bo Widerberg's first work since 1986's The Serpent's Way was touted as his comeback film, but proved to be his farewell: the director died of cancer in May 1997, after All Things Fair had earned an American Oscar nomination, Swedish Guldbagge Awards for best film and best director, and two prizes at Berlin.

World Cinema: Directors -- Bo Widerberg
Already acclaimed as one of the leading novelists of his generation, Widerberg turned to film criticism in the early 1960s.
In 1962 he published a collection of essays, Vision in the Swedish Cinema, which vociferously denounced Swedish film as rarified and oblivious to everyday, contemporary issues; Ingmar Bergman was singled out as the primary offender.
Widerberg gained international acclaim with the lyrically photographed Elvira Madigan (1967), which tells the true story of a doomed love affair in morally oppressive 19th-century Sweden.

Widerberg's biggest international hit remains, over three decades later, a moving, poignant portrait of lovers in a dangerous time.
Set against this turbulent backdrop of social upheaval is the love story of Kjell and Anna: Kjell is the son of a slain labour leader and Anna is the daughter of the factory owner.
The narrator-storyteller of Widerberg's amazing life and career is Thommy Berggren, star of most of the director's greatest films.

Widerberg himself says of the film: "You have to realise that at this period in time it was a relationship that was considered criminal.
The strict sex segregation meant that there was a lack of natural outlet for their pent-up lust." All Things Fair is filled with references to the ongoing war and Widerberg claims that "krigsstämningen" (the feeling of war) is important.
The corridors with their original coat-hooks were still there, and gave the film a true period feel." Bo Wider-berg worked on All Things Fair during the entire winter and spring."It feels good to have been able to give the film the time it needed", he says.
