NICOLE SMITH: (Senior Guide, Cascade Brewery) This building actually started off as a sawmill and Peter Degraves in his foresight saw that it needed to be reverted into a brewery.
From 1824, I guess, as I have already mentioned, the brewery was a saw mill, turned into a brewery, from 1832 the first beer was available to the public - the Pale Ale that we still have running today.
He, he was actually a great man. He took over the brewery after Degraves' son died and he loved it that much, he was such a sensational man, did so much for the brewery that he wanted to be buried here.

We had fed pigs beer, seen the devastating effects of combining logging with mining, arm wrestled with men who depended on logging to feed their families, drunk all sorts of Boags and Cascade variants, and toured two of Australia's most famous breweries.

This must have seemed a good time for the Boags to leave and strike out on their own and, after travelling, running a hotel, and working with John Glenwright at his Cataract Brewery, the Boags snapped up Charles Stammers Button's two-year-old Esk Brewery when it came on the market in January 1883.
This meant that two family breweries were in direct competition – the Esk Brewery at the Shields Street end of Boag's current block, and the Cornwall Brewery near the Tamar Street end.
James Boag senior retired in 1887 and for the next thirty years the Esk Brewery was improved and expanded by his son.
