Board of Governors of the BBC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Board of Governors of the BBC is a group of twelve people who together regulate the BBC and represent the interests of the public, in particular those of viewers and listeners.
Governors are nominally appointed by the monarch on the advice of ministers.
Marmaduke Hussey was appointed chairman of the Board of Governors apparently with the specific agenda of bringing down the then-Director-General Alasdair Milne; this government also broke the tradition of always having a trade union leader on the Board of Governors.

Alasdair Milne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Alasdair David Gordon Milne (born 1930) was Director-General of the BBC from July 1982 until a forced resignation, under intense pressure from the Conservative government and a Board of BBC Governors dominated by Conservatives, in January 1987.
The Thatcher government had been deliberately appointing Conservatives to the BBC Board of Governors in an attempt to undermine Milne's influence, but Stuart Young (brother of a Conservative Tory cabinet minister), appointed chairman in 1983, had "gone native" and become a defender of the BBC's independence.
Pressure on the BBC increased still further after Michael Lush was killed while attempting a stunt for Noel Edmonds' Late Late Breakfast Show, which revealed inadequate safety procedures, and in late 1986 Dennis Potter's series The Singing Detective caused moral outrage on the Right.

BBC governors back reporter over Iraq intelligence row
BBC radio reported in late May, as Prime Minister Tony Blair was visiting British troops in Iraq, that a September dossier on Iraq and weapons of mass destruction had been "sexed up" despite reservations among intelligence chiefs.
The Board concluded that, although the BBC should be reluctant to broadcast stories based on a single source, and warned of the dangers of using anonymous sources, they clearly allowed for this to be done in exceptional circumstances.
The Board said it was "wholly satisfied that BBC journalists and their managers sought to maintain impartiality and accuracy during this episode".

OJR article: The BBC Online in Context
The BBC is the United Kingdom's biggest broadcaster by far, with a budget of more than ?3 billion ($5.48 billion), according to the 2002/2003 Annual Report (PDF), with ?2.6 billion ($4.75 billion) coming directly from consumers through the TV license.
The BBC World Service, the U.K.'s Voice of Britain to the rest of the world, broadcasts in 43 languages, reaching 150 million listeners, which makes it probably the single most influential and recognisable voice across the globe.
One of the lessons of the recent Hutton Enquiry is that doubts have arisen that the BBC Board of Governors is sufficiently removed from the day-to-day running of the corporation to exercise impartial control.

THE BBC is heading for another showdown with Labour after a government-appointed panel yesterday said the corporation’s board of governors should be scrapped and replaced with an independent regulator.
The governors’ role was highly scrutinised in the wake of the Hutton Inquiry, which investigated BBC reporting of government claims about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.
A BBC spokeswoman said: "Lord Burns and his panel have carried out their deliberations with intelligence and rigour and we have participated fully in the debate, most recently at the seminar on governance in December, when the chairman outlined the principles that the BBC board of governors believe any system of governance should deliver.

The NUJ considers that, where appropriate, the BBC should raise income from selling programmes but that this should only be as a supplement to its licence fee income and should not influence the culture of the organisation to the extent that it seeks to mirror the values of the commercial sector.
The BBC Board of Governors, and all media regulators, should therefore be appointed using a system of nomination, election and public scrutiny to ensure that they are not creatures, or seen to be creatures, of the cosy network that constitutes the upper echelons of social and political life in the UK.

And, in the event that the suspension is not sustained, the DG should inform the Board immediately and the Board should then meet in special session to consider all options at its disposal, in accordance with the provisions of Iran’s safeguards agreement and the IAEA Statute.
Paragraph 107 is of fundamental importance to this Board, as it reaffirms a finding the DG shared with us a year ago: that Iran’s past policy of concealment resulted in multiple breaches of its obligation to comply with its Safeguards Agreement.
Madame Chair, with every passing Board meeting at which the Board fails to meet its statutory obligation to report Iran’s noncompliance to the UN Security Council, the Board’s own integrity is weakened, as is the integrity of the IAEA’s safeguards system, a core element of the NPT-based nonproliferation regime.
