Along the Columbia River, the average winter temperature is 37 F and the average summer temperature is 73 F. Precipitation between April and September averages two inches while seasonal snowfall averages nine inches along the Columbia River and 17 inches at higher elevations.
Surface water in the area consists of the Columbia River to the north, the Umatilla River to the northeast, the intermittent stream in Six-Mile Canyon, and lesser streams in the south which end in sediment and fractured rock.
Together with the adjacent Boardman Bombing Range, the state lands are part of one of the few remaining large blocks of native grassland and shrub steppe habitat in the Columbia Basin and a hot-spot for at-risk terrestrial wildlife, including the Washington ground squirrel.

Pieces of history were dredged from the Boardman River Saturday during the Ninth Annual Boardman River Clean-Up.
Scuba divers scouring the bottom of the river from the fish weir toward West Grand Traverse Bay found many interesting items to add to the trash: a Model T steering wheel, car parts, old signs, a tractor tire and posts.
The Boardman River clean up this year drew 27 volunteer divers and more than 70 support people, most of whom are area realtors or associates.

When talk about razing the dams on the Boardman River began to get serious a few years ago, residents who live on the ponds created by the dams worried they would be left literally high and dry with no say in the matter.
To its credit, the Boardman River Dams Committee asked the state and Grand Traverse County, which actually owns the dam, to delay any draw-down unless there is an "imminent safety hazard" that must be dealt with immediately.
