Recluses who chose to bow out from life as most know it, Boards of Canada instead immerse themselves in unadulterated natural surroundings, desiring to live in an environment in union with nature and not in conflict with it.

Boards of Canada
Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase, който изненадва със завръщането на групата към китарния звук, но без да жертва характерните психеделични електронни пейзажи, познати от предходните им издания.

Boards of Canada: The Campfire Headphase: Pitchfork Record Review
The reclusiveness and mystery surrounding Boards of Canada has never been of much interest to me. When music possesses such an uncomplicated immediacy, the story of how it was made and by whom is less crucial.
Boards use of guitar on tracks like "Chromakey Dreamcoat" and "Hey Saturday Sun" makes explicit something about the band's sound that was always just beneath the surface: the connection of the music to the pastoral tradition of British folk.
Of course, this being Boards of Canada, the guitar is first a sound tool, the familiar timbre of which is loaded down with the weight of emotional memory.

Boards of Canada are one of those very rare acts that come along once in a while with a sound so polarised, so outside everything else, that they've practically invented a new genre of their own.
BOC are well-known for their unmistakable analogue drones and science-programme jingles, which are present here in the gorgeously wonky tracks like '84 Pontiac Dream' and 'Oscar See Through Red Eye', but now the sounds are augmented by squelchy percussion and what sounds like a broken electric guitar with half of its strings missing.
Occasionally a poorly-informed reviewer, usually new to Boards of Canada, attempts to criticise their music with remarks about their 'cheesy 70s synth sounds', when in fact this is an unwitting compliment to BOC.

SPIN.com: Boards of Canada The Campfire Headphase (Warp)
As Boards of Canada, Marcus Eoin and Mike Sandison take strangely hypnotic wanderings through a monochromatic, ethereal haze.
With track titles like "'84 Pontiac Dream" and "Constants Are Changing" it might seem like the Scottish duo don't pen the smartest of songs, but their syrupy techno-rock hybrid adeptly incorporates acoustic, electric, and electronic instruments with ambient synergy.
There are, however, missteps: "Dayvan Cowboy" begins promisingly, but as BoC peel back the echoing overcast to reveal melancholy layers of digitalia, the track morphs into Moby-inspired filler.

One of the world's most revered and mysterious electronic acts, Boards of Canada re-emerge from the ether with "The Campfire Headphase" their first album since 2002's mystic "Geogaddi".
While BoC has always proved kings of the solidly built yet simple and enthralling electronic song, many of the tracks here seem to get lost in their own loose discipline.
Albeit a fine, nostalgic joyride, it can be argued that, with "The Campfire Headphase," BoC have cranked their backward time machine past the awkward unease of the 70s and into a blissed-out 60s hippie commune.

BoC seem to have substituted trippy cultism for inspiration, and the result is an absorbing but ultimately claustrophobic work.

Spacelab Music Review - Boards of Canada: The Campfire Headphase
At long last Boards of Canada have released the Campfire Headphase and it's been playing in a non-stop 24 hour rotation in the headphones of my mind.
I guess that's what Boards of Canada does, they create soundscapes, musical interludes from some forgotten afternoon in 1974 that get recaptured and brought through a time warp to today in the context of modern electronic music.
They do have a sense of maturity on this album though, it seems that Boc have been doing Boc long enough to know what BoC is about and how to do it.

Yes that's right, Boards of Canada are back with their third long player, following on from 2002s mostly excellent Geogaddi and the genuine post-modern classic that is Music Has the Right to Children, released back in 1999.
And it is eyebrow-raisingly strange when you first listen to track two, Chromakey Dreamcoat, to hear an acoustic guitar cementing a Boards of Canada track together.
The damaged soundtracks they found on 16mm educational documentaries made by the National Film Board of Canada, which inspired their name, continue to define their sound, even if it's only in spirit, not in sample.
