Boat Quay was created with earth taken from a leveled hillock which once stood where Raffles Place is now situated.
Since then, Boat Quay was known as Public Quay and always enjoyed a pioneer status among the quays of the Singapore River.
The Boat Quay shophouses in the past were catered mainly to the river trade businesses, Now they have been upgraded and adapted for new uses such as restaurants, offices, alfresco dining, lively bars and pubs.

The name of Boat Quay in Singapore is synonymous with the freewheeling financial district.
It is a place where hundreds of office ties and business jackets gather for some R and R after a tough day of meddling in the financial markets and other what have you.
Of course Boat Quay is destination to other groups of people, including the gulliable tourists who are brought there to have a look at the harbour where coolies loaded the Quay with sacks of rice and other goods carried from ships from faraway lands.
