  Boat Anchor History
Try to pull anchors by hand is no easy task and the vessels were for the most part under 100 feet long and carried small crews.
The Nordhill type of anchor is based off of what the old sailing ships used so the individual boatman has a very good choice this day and age at choosing the style of anchor which suits them best for the waters they frequent.
Boating safety equipment is a must and your anchor is one of the items...

 Anchoring
Your choice of anchor depends on the size and type of your boat, and the weather and anchoring conditions you generally encounter.
Lightweight type anchor with two long pivoting "flukes"; designed to reduce clogging with mud and grass; range from 2.5 pounds to nearly 200 pounds, and are generally made of cast galvanized metal, though some models are machined from a light-weight aluminum composite.
Depending upon the size and type of your boat, and where you anchor--your choices for an anchor line are either an all-rope anchor rode, a combination of rope and chain, or all chain.

Many people had their boats driven ashore in Ivan and Katrina when they thought they were in good "Hurricane holes"--I have never had a boat damaged in a hurricane--but I currently live on a bayou where only the boats are owned by the home owners are anchored/tied to trees/docks etc.
There are dangers of anchoring--one is that another boat will drag into your boat--that is both from the tripping of your anchor (even 150lbs) fouling your anchor, or hitting your boat.
If the boat is only exposed to the wind from one direction the original idea of using a barge anchor will work fine.

 Finding the Right Anchor
Out of the many roles that anchors serve, the most prevalent are securing the boat while fishing, keeping boats out of the surf or rocks or allowing the occupants to enjoy a relaxing meal on board without drifting away.
This style of anchor is ideal for small boats, and is ideal for dinghies as there are no open flukes to puncture the sensitive fabric of the craft itself.
This type of anchor is a hands-free style with a base that is attached to the bow of the boat.

During heavy weather, the sea anchor allows the captain and crew to deal with exhaustion and seasickness, to maintain adequate nourishment, to tend to the boat, and to maintain rational decision-making abilities.
Historically, a sea anchor was anything from a leather bucket to a cone-shaped canvas scoop used off the bow to hold the boat in a safe position when faced with heavy wind and waves.
In this attitude if the boat is struck by a large breaking wave, which is the most dangerous threat to a boat in heavy weather, the boat will be briefly accelerated up to wave speed, and then as the wave passes it will be dragged back by the series drogue.

Citrus: Learn to anchor boat properly or be prepared to swim ashore
Anchoring can be vital for the protection of both your vessel and your life.
Tragedy in that case was avoided by the fact that the passengers were wearing personal flotation devises and other boats were in the area who were able to retrieve the skipper and his passengers from the water.
Many boats carry at least two anchors, a lightweight one for use in good weather and in protected anchorages, and a heavy anchor for use in bad weather or for overnight anchoring when there might be danger of dragging.

anchors and anchor accessories by Hydrobubble for safe boat anchoring
Anchoring is not a precise science due to the diversity of boat designs, boat profile factors, wind and weather conditions, wave or tidal action, bottom composition and conditions where anchoring, etc. Anchor sizing information can only be approximate, and you are the best person to fully assess which anchor is best for you.
These anchor recommendations are from the manufacturer and are based on their knowledge gained from testing, from figures and writings published by recognized experts; and from information and data from other anchor manufacturers.

Sea Anchor Comparison by Sail Magazine
Some fin-keel-and-skeg boats heave-to with a storm jib on the backstay; others are happy with a storm trysail set; still others need a sea anchor or drogue to hold their bow up near the wind.
As the boat and para-anchor lay in the trough of their waves, it was quite easy to winch in six or eight feet of line.
Modern boats can be made to heave-to, but since they don't balance the same as their working ancestors, try experimenting with backstaysails, sheeted-in mizzens, trysails, and para-anchors so you can take advantage of the sailors safety valve.

We advise against leaving the boat tied tightly on a vehicle in the sun on a hot day for a long period of time.
Occasionally, you may want to anchor your boat in order to stay on a particularly good fishing spot, etc. It is always best to anchor the boat from the end, rather than the middle, because you don’t want to be sideways in the current while anchored.
To do this, run your anchor line from the rear of the boat using either the grab loop, anchor pad, or an eyelet that you have added as the tie off point.

The typical pleasure boat anchor rode is a long length of nylon line shackled to a short length of chain at the anchor end of the rode.
When waves roll into an anchored boat, the nylon stretches like long rubber band, preventing the destructive jerking that occurs with a less stretchy rode.
To determine how long your anchor rode should be, multiply the deepest water you expect to anchor in by eight.
