Buhl failed to record a single hit in 70 at-bats in 1962, the worst single-season batting performance in major league history.

Although Buhl never had a year to match his 1962 season, he did have some other highly futile campaigns at the plate, chalking up batting averages of.032,.057,.060 and.067 at various times during his 15 year career.
Even though Buhl’s career average bottomed out at.089, and there certainly are other pitchers with career averages closer to.100, among them Stephenson, D’Amico, Martinez and Schmidt, it’s important when you’re creating a metric like this that it be mnemonic, in addition to being clever.
