Topic: Bob Clearmountain

In the News (Wed 30 May 12)

  Bob Clearmountain
Clearmountain obviously settled very comfortably into the role - he readily admits that he enjoys the mixing stage far more than doing the whole producer's job - turning out a seemingly endless string of hits through the '80s and '90s.
Clearmountain is quietly spoken, disarmingly frank about his apprehension at the prospect of being interviewed, but above all he comes across as entirely without pretension - almost humble in the way he speaks of his own achievements.
Clearmountain's mixing tips for the project studio are as applicable to the guy mixing on a portable cassette multitracker as to the man himself on his giant SSL.

Bob Clearmountain, one of the country’s foremost mix engineers, worked with Brooke on her previous solo effort from a few years ago, 10 Cent Wings, and was so impressed that he wanted to do this album entirely in his own studio in Pacific Palisades.
Clearmountain’s former assistant, Ryan Freeland, now a much sought-after engineer in his own right, handled the original demos, some of which made their way on to the final cuts.
Bob Ludwig, perhaps one of the world’s leading mastering engineers, has done a superb job of putting this album on to disc.

Bob Clearmountain's success as a mix engineer through the years has led to a string of plum production assignments.
Clearmountain exploited surround mixing on one track in particular, Brooke's “How Deep Is Your Love.” “Jonatha recorded multiple vocal passes, and we decided to treat them like an amusement park ride,” he says.
Meanwhile, Clearmountain is dealing with a welter of high-profile mix assignments, while Jonatha Brooke is allowing herself a moment to enjoy the taste of artistic fulfillment.

Recording & Remixing Roxy Music's Avalon
By the time band and producer headed to the Power Station in New York to finish the album with Bob Clearmountain, it was still a long way from being complete, lacking as it did lyrics, vocals, and live drums.
The CD version has already had the remastering treatment at the hands of Bob Ludwig, who'd mastered it the first time around; and, as one of the most important albums in Virgin's back catalogue, it was an obvious candidate for remixing into surround.
Bob Clearmountain's preference for mixing in the analogue domain is reversed when it comes to choice of recording medium.

In person, Bob Clearmountain looks much too youthful to have been engineering for more than 25 years.
One of the first superstar engineers, Clearmountain's fame was key to elevating the role of mixer from obscurity to center stage, and his work, a seemingly effortless combination of technique and feel, inspired and influenced a generation of engineers.
A phenomenon that spawned hit after hit, Power Station records featured unique and innovative sounds, many of them spearheaded by “Bad Bob.” His lengthy discography extends from that era through to the present and is nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Viola's rough voice has much of Parker's urgency to it, and his songs, less substantial than those of Costello, nevertheless are concerned with many of the same elements of romantic disappointment and its attendant frustration.
Mixer Bob Clearmountain has given the album an explosive sound in which every instrument seems simultaneously very loud and distinct.
Chip-on-the-shoulder sensitivity is a good combination of feelings in the ever-adolescent world of rock 'n' roll, and it works as well for Viola on this debut album as it has for others in the past.
