Topic: Bob Davidson (umpire)

STL Outsider: Balking Bob Davidson   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
MLB has hired back three of the umpires who took part in the idiotic mass resignation scheme in 1999, among them Bob Davidson, who worked in the Midwest League in 2004.
Umpires have been known to get a little lazy crouching down to see the low pitches, but that wasn't the case with Davidson.
Davidson probably was the oldest umpire in the Midwest League by twenty years (and he's bald enough to make it obvious), but he really seemed to enjoy himself at A-ball.

ESPN.com: MLB - No minor goal: Davidson wants back in the majors
Bob Davidson, left, was an umpire in the majors for 18 seasons, the last of which came in 1999.
Davidson is one of the nine, and though they still have a lawsuit pending, he's essentially given up waiting for a court remedy.
Davidson qualified as a minor-league umpire this spring and threw his luggage into a car with 21-year-old umpire Scott Jarrod, who was born the year Davidson first reached the majors.

Davidson is among three umpires who will be rehired by Major League Baseball as part of a settlement of the nasty dispute that cost 22 umps their jobs in 1999.
The umpires will be brought back as part of a new five-year labor contract that was agreed to Wednesday, a deal that also settles the 1½-year-old grievance umpires filed over a computer system baseball has used to evaluate plate umps.

Davidson was prepared to move up to the next rung on the umpiring ladder in 2005 and work in an advanced Class A league.
Because Davidson was able to maintain his service time in the majors, there will be a nice financial booster rocket to his return, a salary of nearly $275,000 for the full season.
To the young umpires there trying, as Davidson once did, to work their way up, Davidson is more than a footnote to labor history, an umpire who had taken a long, hard fall.

Can't Stop The Bleeding » Schmuck Takes On Balkin’ Bob
Davidson used to be known as “Balkin’ Bob,” back before he temporarily lost his job in the umpire labor war in 1999.
Still, Davidson called the balk with the score tied in the eighth inning and the game dragging on to the point where it apparently was questionable whether he would make his flight to Tampa for the series between the Devil Rays and the Chicago White Sox.
That may be true, but nobody in baseball is able to detect such minuscule movement better than Davidson, whose tendencies are well-known to pitching coaches, some of whom instruct their pitchers to be on their best balk-free behavior when Davidson is in the ballpark.

It has been the source of several disputes since, mostly because there's a chain-link fence between the padding and the yellow rail, making it difficult for umpires to tell for certain whether a ball clears the rail, hits right in front of it and bounces over or even if a fan reaches over.
