Denver was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. He discovered acting while studying law at Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles in the 1950s.
But Denver's indelible role was that of Gilligan, whose antics often involved accidentally thwarting the rescue efforts of the castaways: skipper Jonas Grumby (Alan Hale Jr.); millionaire Thurston Howell III (Jim Backus) and his wife, Lovey (Natalie Schafer); movie star Ginger (Tina Louise); the professor (Russell Johnson); and farm girl Mary Ann (Dawn Wells).
