Delving into Columbia's three Dylan greatest-hits packages, Essential offers only a few surprises, opting for The Basement Tapes version of "Quinn The Eskimo" over the Self Portrait remake that made it onto Greatest Hits Volume II and tossing in "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys soundtrack for completists.
The two discs of The Essential Bob Dylan don't exactly provide a thorough overview of four decades of recording by one of the most important and prolific performers of his time.

Personnel changes and internal disputes, combined with changing musical fashions, caused their popularity to dwindle in the late '60s.

Amazon.com: Music: The Band - Greatest Hits [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]
The Band were an idiosyncratic outfit, blending folk, rock, country, R&B and a little bit of soul and gospel, and their tenure as Bob Dylan's legendary touring band made them a supremely tight and versatile ensemble.
The Band's "Greatest Hits" is one of the very few compilation albums that those interested in the group would be fortunate to buy before actually buying the original albums themselves.
From their beginning as Ronnie Hawkins' backing band to their days touring with Dylan and on their own, the four Canadians and one American who made up "The Band" forged a connection between country and rock that was unique in its purity and complexity.

 VH1.com : Neil Young : Biography
Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic.
Young's next studio project was his most ambitious yet, a concept album about small-town life titled Greendale that he also mounted as a live dramatic tour and indie film.
Young decided to push his Geffen contract to the limit, releasing the electronic Trans, where his voice was recorded through a computerized vocoder, later that year.

 Neil Young: Greatest Hits
Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic.
After Neil Young left the Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation.
From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s until the late '90s, he never stopped writing, recording, and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults.

The Byrds - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bridging the gap between the socially and spiritually conscious folk music of Bob Dylan and the complex pop of The Beatles, The Byrds are considered one of the most important and influential bands of the 1960s.
The Byrds were founded in Los Angeles, California in 1964 by singers and guitarists Jim McGuinn (he later changed his name to Roger McGuinn), Gene Clark, and David Crosby.
Their 1968 The Notorious Byrd Brothers, which featured compositions by the group as well as by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, is today regarded as their masterpiece.

Along with spanning the group’s five album releases, Greatest Hits also marks the debut on a Guns N’ Roses album of the band’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ "Sympathy For The Devil" for the 1995 film Interview With The Vampire.
Though none of their subsequent albums matched the drug-crazed genius of Appetite for Destruction, they did, as the Greatest Hits reminds, have their moments.

 The Byrds
Bob Dylan witnessed the Byrds’ recording sessions in January of 1965 and in June released Bringing It All Back Home which offered up several electrified folk-tinged rock and roll songs.
There is little point to pushing the Byrds as progenitors of a music that already existed, no matter how well they emulated it (reference points being the Dillards, Merle Haggard, early rockabilly, and the country elements found in many standard 60’s folk albums).
The Byrds adhered so closely to the country/bluegrass format that they are virtually just another country/bluegrass band, albeit one with good taste and heavy drums.

 Bob Dylan Who's Who
Ochs was a huge Dylan fan and also was one of his staunchest defenders when he moved into rock.
When Dylan moved into rock, Ochs eventually followed, but instead decided to combine his songs with "classical music." The result was his first album on A&M, (his fourth album chronologically) "Pleasure of the Harbor." By the time this album finally appeared, Ochs had been singing many of these songs for a couple of years.
Ochs' "Pleasures of the Harbor" was an all-too-grand attemot to create his own "Blonde on Blonde" and become a major songwriter/poet.

Phil Ochs: The Best of Phil Ochs: 20th Century Masters: Pitchfork Review
"You're not a folk singer," Bob Dylan accused Phil Ochs, "you're a journalist." He echoed the most consistent criticism of the late Phil Ochs, who made his name with topical folk songs.
Ochs churned out political lyrics, taking ideas from the news and from first-hand experience with the turmoil of the 1960s: a coal miners' strike in Kentucky, the fight for civil rights in Mississippi, and anti-war rallies, some of which he helped organize.
Ochs' voice is limited-- with his narrow range and slight twang, he was no Tony Bennett-- but it's stark against the baroque arrangements, and the sincerity makes songs like "Flower Lady" honestly beautiful.

 "Greatest Hits" - Bruce Springsteen
Springsteen was "discovered" by John Hammond, who had also been responsible for spotting the talent of Bob Dylan.
Springsteen is a masterful story teller, able to conjure images in the listener's brain with remarkable literary brevity.
On the surface, it was one of the most unlikely of rock re-births: Springsteen, all-American rock hero, jumping on the populist AIDS bandwagon represented by the film "Philadelphia", but in the space of one 3-minute recording, he captured more genuine emotion than the entire film managed to do.

 SOUNDTHESIRENS.COM - Review :: Neil Young - Greatest Hits
Young is far closer to Bob Dylan, whose greatest hits span three volumes.
The line shows exactly how mechanical, half-hearted, and capitalistic this CD really is: “Greatest hits inclusion based on original records sales, airplay and known download history.&; This is the biggest rock tragedy since “Baba O’Riley” was hawking SUVs; and a sad statement about the lack of heart in the recording industry today.
Ignoring a ludicrous track ordering, lack of liner notes, and quite possibly the worst music DVD ever created, Greatest Hits is an album filled with musical gems.
