Fitzsimmons battered Sharkey and had him on the verge of a knock-out but when he hit him with a body and head punch combination he was declared loser on a disqualification because he hit Sharkey while Sharkey was down.

Robert James "Bob" Fitzsimmons (May 26, 1863 - October 22, 1917) was a British (The people of Great Britain) native who made fistic (additional info and facts about fistic) history by being boxing's first three division world champion ever.
In 1899, Fitzsimmons and James J. Jeffries (additional info and facts about James J. Jeffries) were able to box in New York without the police intervening, probably at an under-ground club.
He boxed Jack Johnson (additional info and facts about Jack Johnson), and his fight with Bob KO Sweeney (additional info and facts about Bob KO Sweeney) is believed to be the first boxing fight in history to be captured on film.

Bob Fitzsimmons was a man of many nicknames: “Ruby Robert,” “Rock Cod,” “Speckled Bob,” and “the Freckled Wonder.” As the holder of no less than three world titles, Middleweight (1881- 1897), Heavyweight (1897-99) and Light Heavyweight (1903-1905) he is considered by many to be among the greatest boxers who ever lived.
Bob had a combative side as well, and is reputed to have coined the expression, “the bigger they come the harder they fall.” (Actually it was Joe Walcott, a fighter from Barbados who first said it.) Leaving his affable, joking nature at the ringside, Bob fought for keeps once inside the ropes.
Bob Fitzsimmons died of pneumonia on 22 October 1917 and is buried in Chicago’s Graceland Cemetery, not far from the grave of Jack Johnson.

Fitzsimmons lost his title on his first defence on 9 June 1899 when James J. Jeffries, to whom he conceded 39 pounds and 12 years, knocked him out in 11 rounds at Coney Island.
Fitzsimmons died of pneumonia in Chicago, Illinois, on 22 October 1917, survived by his fourth wife.

Bob has a good two rounds in four and five, scoring heavily to Joe's body, and Louis visibly gasps on two occasions.
