Anatomy of Bob Greene - Salon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Bob is married, with two kids, one of whom he celebrated in the 1984 bestseller "Good Morning, Merry Sunshine," the book that began the trend of writers commoditizing their children.
Greene issued the standard, passive apology fragment, that he was "sorry for anyone I have let down." The story led the local TV newscasts in Chicago on Sunday, except of course for WGN (which, remember, stands for "World's Greatest Newspaper"), the station owned by the Tribune, which buried it deep in the program.
News stories do not always emphasize the most salient facts, and Bob's apparent terrified rush to the FBI was a fact that was easy to overlook, particularly as the image of Bob Greene having sex with a teen was seared into the collective consciousness.

WhosWho Chicago: Bob Greene : CenterstageChicago.com - Chicago City Life in Chicago, Illinois
Greene still goes on the road, but now he is a celebrity in his own right.
Greene seems to excite a great depth of feeling from the public; long one of Chicago's most popular columnists, he has also been critically reviled for his turgid prose and syrupy sentimentality.
Greene has twice published selections from his own diaries, first in 1984 to celebrate the birth of his daughter, and then in 1987, when he discovered his high school journal among some old papers.

Anatomy of Bob Greene - Salon
Bob (calling him "Greene" somehow feels wrong, like calling Elvis "Presley") was the bard of Middle America, the defender of abused children, the relentless nostalgist who seldom paused from keening for the lost world of pre-1964 Columbus, Ohio, to notice anything positive in life today.
When Bob did find something that met his approval, it was inevitably presented as a freakish anomaly, an unexpected flower growing out of our blasted and ruined landscape.
The BobWatch philosophy was that Bob was so woefully bad, so frightened and out-of-touch and tone deaf, that he could be savored as a guilty pleasure, the way lousy 1950s sci-fi thrillers are enjoyed as camp.

Critical Mass - Boalt's Bob Greene
This situation is very similar to the dismissal of Bob Greene from The Chicago Tribune earlier this year.
Neither Greene nor the Dean (couldn't resist that) did anything they hadn't been doing for years and years and years; in both cases, I think institutional elements had long ago sharpened their knives for them, and were all too happy to take advantage of the accusations.
Now they not only have their "proof," but they have a situation that conveniently reframes ideological differences as ethical ones: it is no longer a question of whether Dwyer's managerial style excludes women, but one of what can be done to prevent similar predators from terrorizing women students in the future.
