Canned Heat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The group was led by Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson (guitar, harmonica, vocals) and Bob Hite ("The Bear") (vocals, harmonica).
The last studio recording with Bob Hite was 1978's Human Condition, with Hite singing the title track, an old Alan Wilson tune that had been recorded solo by Wilson but hadn't been released.
Bob Hite died in April, 1981 (as did Vestine in 1997 and Richard Hite in 2001), and by 1989 the trajectories of Hooker and Canned Heat crossed once again.

A hard-luck blues band of the '60s, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan Wilson and Bob Hite.
Canned Heat's debut album -- released shortly after their appearance at Monterey -- was every bit as deep into the roots of the blues as any other combo of the time mining similar turf, with the exception of the original Paul Butterfield band.
Hite was nicknamed "The Bear" and stalked the stage in the time-honored tradition of Howlin' Wolf and other large-proportioned bluesmen.

The reshaped band enjoyed two further UK hits with a cover version of Wilbert Harrison's "Let's Work Together", which reached number 2, and the Cajun-inspired "Sugar Bee", but they were then shattered by the suicide of Wilson, whose body was found in Hite's backyard on 3 September 1970.
Bob Hite, the sole remaining original member, attempted to keep the band afloat, but was unable to secure a permanent recording contract.

In the end, predictably enough, Canned Heat became more of a cult band than a pop sensation, but they are remembered with great affection by freaks of a certain age.
Founders Alan Wilson and Bob Hite both died early - Wilson in 1970 (probably from drugs) and Hite in 1981 (probably from factors related to the girth that earned him the nickname "Bear").
Wilson, Hite, and Vestine were blues fans (and record collectors) as much as blues musicians, and though their affection for the blues was a key component to Canned Heat's chemistry, their musicianship was impressive, too.
