Friendly Giant - CBC Classics - CBC Days to Remember - CBC Archives
A creation of Bob Homme, the program began at a small commercial TV station in Wisconsin in 1954.
He would invite them to have a seat: "One little chair for one of you, and a bigger chair for two to curl up in, and for someone who likes to rock, a rocking chair in the middle." Then: "Look up, look wa-a-ay up…" and there was Friendly, soon joined by Rusty and Jerome.
Bob Homme passed away in May 2000 at age 81.

Bob Homme as The Friendly Giant broadcasted on the CBC.
Robert "Bob" Homme, CM, B.Sc (1919 - May 2, 2000) was an American-born television actor perhaps best known as the eponymous host of The Friendly Giant, a popular Canadian children's television program in the 1960s and 1970s which was broadcast on the CBC.
He was invested into the Order of Canada as a Member on November 2, 1998 in Grafton, Ont. (being too ill to travel, the Governor General went to him instead of making him come to Rideau Hall, where the award is usually bestowed), allowing him to use the Post Nominal Letters "C.M."

 Friendly Giant Dies at 81
Bob Homme retired in 1985, and settled just north of Grafton, Ontario, with his wife, Esther, whom he wed in the late 1940s, and with whom he had four children.
Homme got the word that the CBC wanted his show (at the time, working for CBC was a real coup), and moved his family (youngest son, Peter, was only days old) to Toronto, where he picked up a new puppeteer (Roy Coneybeare).
When Homme was too ill to attend the ceremony, the Governor General of Canada at that time (Romeo LeBlanc) traveled to Homme's home in Grafton to present the award personally.

 CBC: Life And Times
Every weekday morning for 26 years, The Friendly Giant (Homme) lowered the drawbridge and invited his pre-school TV viewing audience in for 15 minutes of storytelling and music.
Homme would show up at the studio with a simple outline and the confidence that he and Rod Coneybeare (the puppeteer for Rusty and Jerome) had the chemistry to make it work.
His philosophy for the show was based on creating an unchanging environment for children that was safe, gentle and quiet.

The reason it sounded so normal was that Rod Coneybeare (the voice of Gerome and Rusty) and Bob Homme pretty much ad-libbed that portion of the show then Friendly would read from a book that Rusty pulled up out of the book bag.
The music was an important part of the show, but it had to be simple, Friendly played his recorder, the background was a harp that Rusty was supposedly playing and one a week the two really ugly cats would show up to play violins.

Bob Homme, has been retired and living large somewhere around Peterborough (word has it) since 1984.
Homme was able to create a character that is very rare on the Canadian airwaves, a legendary persona, a man whose signature line, "Look up, waaay up, and I'll call Rusty," is as familiar as "Beam me up, Scotty" to any kid raised in Canada from the '60s onward.
I suspect that the CBC would have to offer Homme a fairly generous contract in order to make up for the way they treated him 1984.
