  Bob Hoover - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoover was Yeager's backup pilot in the Bell X-1 program and flew chase for Yeager in a Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star during the Mach 1 flight, and flew chase for the 50th anniversary in an F-16.
Bob Hoover is most well known for his air show career, which started when he was hired to demonstrate the capabilities of Aero Commander's Shrike Commander, a twin-engined piston business aircraft which had developed a rather staid reputation due to its bulky shape.
Bob Hoover is considered one of the founding fathers of modern aerobatics, he was described by Jimmy Doolittle as, "...the greatest stick-and-rudder man who ever lived." In the Centennial of flight edition of the Air and Space Smithsonian, he was named the third greatest aviator in history.

Hoover used his extensive test pilot and fighter pilot skills to become a legendary airshow pilot and brought a simple business aircraft to international attention.
At altitude, Hoover set a glass on top of the instrument panel and proceeded to pour iced tea into the glass from a pitcher in his right hand while using his left hand to completely roll the aircraft.
Hoover submitted to several medical examinations and flight tests, consistently proving his health qualifications and flight proficiency, before his certificate was restored to him, at age 73, in October 1995.

Bob Hoover, who has been one of the world’s top air show pilots for more than four decades, contacted EAA to report that he is cancelling his 2000 air show appearances, including his scheduled performance at EAA AirVenture 2000 this summer.
Hoover is, however, considering retiring the Shrike Commander that has been a mainstay of his air show routine.
Although Hoover will not be performing at AirVenture 2000, he will attend the event this summer and participate in a number of forums and other activities that highlight his remarkable career as a combat pilot, test pilot and air show performer.
