In 1962, Bob James recorded a bop-ish trio set for Mercury, and three years later his album for ESP was quite avant-garde, with electronic tapes used for effects.
BOB JAMES: Since the end of the bebop era there's been a struggle, mostly unsuccessful, to come up with names that adequately represent the different stylistic changes that have taken place in contemporary jazz.

Bob James' popularity as a smooth jazz pianist has sometimes obscured the fact that he's also a fine bop and fusion musician.
James was discovered by Quincy Jones while he was still a college student and his 1962 debut Bold Conceptions shows how well versed he is in hard bop.
James currently divides most of his time between cutting very commercial instrumentals and R&B heavy smooth jazz (often with his all-star band Fourplay) but he still keeps his hand in the acoustic jazz world.

Bob, it's fair to say, did not care what words you put on his awards -- he was employed, his beard looked great, and he even got the chance to make a classical-crossover album.
Bob's solos are often spare and rhythm at first, then they move toward ecstasy, and Rhodes is a great platform for this kind of playing, its tines vibrating like mad and setting up exciting overtones.

Bob recalls, "I came to New York with the idea of performing in a trio setting, but after the first two records, I worked more as a behind-the-scenes arranger and instrumentalist, including doing a stint as Sarah Vaughan's musical director." That "stint" lasted four years.
Bob returned to solo endeavors in 1994 with "Restless", an album that featured a vocal track with Bob's daughter Hilary, and foreshadowed the 1995 release of "Flesh And Blood", a father-and-daughter collaboration.
Bob recalls, "I was so busy arranging, performing and recording, the time just slipped away; but people would keep asking, 'when are you going to do another solo project?'" Restless is a journey into Bob's heart and soul.
