Bob Kane - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bob Kane (October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was an American comic book artist who is known well as the creator of Batman, although many feel that Bill Finger should be unofficially acknowledged as the co-creator of the character.
Kane, the more business-savvy of the Kane-Finger creative team, negotiated a contract with National, signing away any ownership that he might have in the character in exchange for, among other compensations, a mandatory byline on all Batman comics stating "Batman created by Bob Kane", regardless of whether he was involved in the specific issue.
Kane's major contributions to Batman were in the 1940s.

"Bob Kane is a giant in the field of popular culture, one of a handful of people who launched the comic book industry and who gave the world a group of characters so colorful and inventive that they continue to captivate every new generation," said Jenette Kahn, president and editor in chief of DC Comics.
The background is well-known to fans of Kane and Batman: Teenager Bruce Wayne, traumatized by witnessing his parents' murder, vows to avenge their deaths and uses his vast fortune to study criminology, perfect his athletic body and acquire clever vehicles and weapons to fight crime in his hometown of Gotham.
Kane, who changed his surname from Kahn early in his career, assembled a staff to work with him on the comic strip, but remained the principal artist through the 1940s and closely supervised the work for many years after that.

Kane would illustrate 'Batman' until the mid 1940s, and although his name appeared on the strip until 1964, the work was done mostly by other artists, initially Robinson, and later also Stan Kaye, Sheldon Moldoff, Dick Sprang, Jack Burnley, and Carmine Infantino.

Kane and Finger based the final version on a photograph of actor Conrad Veidt, who was wearing make-up for a silent film entitled "The Man Who Laughs"; however, the Joker's penchant for leaving his calling card at the scene of a crime was taken from Robinson's original concept.
Robinson was actually Bob Kane's inker and letterer during the early years until Kane hired George Roussos to take over the background chores.

Tasked with creating a follow-up character to DC Comics' flagship hero Superman, artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger summoned a figure out of the Jungian ether destined to be the Son of Krypton's shadowy reflection, the Hades to his Apollo - and, for many readers, a far more compelling character.
