Newman was born in Washington, DC in 1958.
Newman was a Marine for 20 years, during which time he held a variety of infantry, reconnaissance, recruiting, special operations, counterterrorism and survival billets, rising to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (E-7).
In 1993, Newman was reassigned as a squad advisor and the chief warfighting instructor at the Advanced Course, Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy aboard Camp Geiger, a billet from which he retired.

When Bob passed away from cancer on April 29 at the age of 70, CSULB lost not only an outstanding professor who began his career in 1967 as a statistics specialist in the Department of Psychology, but also a person who truly loved the university.
Newman received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Amherst in 1950 and 1952, respectively, and his Ph.D. from the U. of Illinois in 1955.
Newman was extremely giving of his time to students and faculty.

The Bob Newman Award, named for one of the original co-founders of the CSIA, was established last year by the Colorado Software and Internet Association with the intention of recognizing those individuals who made outstanding, long-term commitments to the success and viability of the CSIA, its membership and the Colorado IT community as a whole.
During 1994, Bob Newman, through his association with J.D. Edwards, was acquainted with the workings of the nationally-based Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) and was aware that many states had at least one, and sometimes multiple, technology associations.
