That Paisley went on to even greater things as manager (without Shanks' influence) is testament to the ability and talent he had, but the unlocking of that management potential was only realised because Shankly had been there before him and laid the groundwork.
Paisley had the tactical ability at the highest level to take Liverpool to European Cup triumphs, something that had eluded Shankly, but years and years of experience garnered by both men went into those European successes of the '70s and '80s.

Although Bob actually joined Liverpool in 1939 when he was just 20 years old, the Second World War took away the formative years of his competitive career and he didn't make his full debut for the club until 1946, when he played in 4 FA cup ties.
Bob was never renowned as a goalscorer but one important strike, a lob from the left which caught the Everton goalkeeper out, helped Liverpool through to the FA cup final of 1950.
Bob's managerial exploits are well chronicled elsewhere but don’t forget he was a very respected player as well and made over 250 First Division appearances for his one and only League club, with a further 25 coming in the FA Cup competition.

Robert 'Bob' Paisley OBE (born 23rd January 1919, died 14th February, 1996) was an English football player who became best known for being one of the most successful managers ever in English football whilst managing his only team Liverpool Football Club in the 1970s and 1980s.
Paisley retired in 1983 after spending 44 unbroken years at the club, be was replaced by Joe Fagan, another of the Boot Room old boys.
Paisley was made an Inaugural Inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002 in recognition of his impact on the English game as a manager.
