Roberts further burnished his anti-choice credentials with his brief in Rust v.
Roberts wasn't warmly endorsed by Tony Perkins and Operation Rescue because of his Ivy League pedigree and his expensive suits.
And if they're right, if Roberts is willing to do that, then there's no way of telling what other extremist doctrines he might buy into -- up to and including the "Constitution in exile." His record on the bench is simply too spare to tell one way or the other.

"Bob Roberts" is a gimlet-eyed little mockumentary chronicling the rise, fall and rise of merciless, villainous, Machiavellian and media-savvy politician Bob Roberts, who---as the film's opening sequence makes clear---is a man of many talents: former West Pointer, Wall Street trader and stock market guru, self-made millionaire, and right-wing folk singer.
Roberts is an ingenious political animal, having picked up a guitar and made the transition from Woodstock to Wall Street---and now he wants Main Street.
The plot is simplicity itself: "Bob Roberts" is played with a straight face as the'documentary' of the 1992 Bob Roberts Pennsylvania senatorial campaign, produced and 'directed' by fictional documentarian Terry Manchester (played convincingly by veteran British actor Brian Murray).

Bob Roberts is, I suppose, the equivalent of This is Spinal Tap in terms of US politics- though I thought Warren Beatty's Bulworth (1999) was funnier & more engaging.
Roberts is as deluded over his past as Tom Cruise's character in Magnolia or Jeffrey Archer in the recent BBC-TV fantasy biopic.
Bob Roberts paints a bleak portrait of US politics at the start of the 90's, while Bulworth does the same at the end of the millennium.

 Bob Roberts: Special Edition (1992)
Bob Roberts can’t quite decide if it wants to be an overtly comedic satire of politics - especially those on the right side of the fence - or if it desires to make grand, Oliver Stone-style statements about corruption and cowardice.
A project such as Bob Roberts has merit, but political satires are some of the most difficult to make due to the clarity of the creator’s bias; it’s nearly impossible for this form of work to avoid the taint of ideological fervor.
Bob Roberts appears in an aspect ratio of approximately 1.33:1 on this single-sided, single-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

The camera follows Roberts around on his campaign trail against incumbent Brickley Paiste (Gore Vidal) where he mostly presents the issues in songs, released on albums with Dylanesque titles like The Freewheelin' Bob Roberts and The Times They Are A-Changin' Back.
What I find most amazing is the ability of Robbins (and brother David) to write songs for Roberts that portray a political ideology 180 degrees from their own, and that are darn catchy to boot.
But the darkly humorous tone of Bob Roberts becomes far too bitter and jaded for comfort when a chain of events revealng Roberts to be a liar goes on far too long and chooses a conventional way to wrap up.

BOB ROBERTS is a quirky, biting satire on modern politics and the "new conservative" movement.
The title character, Bob Roberts (played by Tim Robbins), is a stockbroker, folk singer and amateur fencer who runs for a U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania.
Interspersed with this campaign commentary are interviews with Roberts' parents, fans, incumbent campaign opponent, and a bedraggled heckler from the alternative press who badgers his campaign with accusations about alleged links with Iran-Contra, misuse of government funds, and other half-paranoid, half-believable claims.

The DVD Journal: Bob Roberts: Special Edition
Robbins stars as Bob Roberts, a U.S. Senate candidate from Pennsylvania who cleverly co-opts the image of the 1960s rebel — he sings folk songs, he rides a motorcycle — but twists them to serve and promote "conservative" values (which are represented here as essentially an obsession with money).
Where Roberts is portrayed in extremes as a slick rat, Paiste is simply a beleaguered old man who wants to talk about the issues but finds himself quickly on the defensive as he's falsely implicated in a sex scandal.
We are treated to scene after scene of Roberts and his campaign being mocked as petty, sneaky, racist, bullying, and cruel, and scene after scene of sincere liberals protesting with righteous indignance — but without a trace of exaggeration.

Coonce's Gift Cottage: Send Flowers: Bob Roberts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
I first saw "Bob Roberts" in 1992, when it came out and when I was younger and further to the left than I am now, and I thought it was terrific.
But "Bob Roberts" does just that to pander to the paranoia and hysteria of the strident left, which has become ever more strident and paranoid since George W. Bush became president (see some of the five-star reviews of this movie, which use words like "Nazipuglican" to describe the writers' political opponents).
I'm giving "Bob Roberts" two stars, not one, because it did have its moments, and because was in fact something of a pioneer in Hollywood in illustrating the mechanisms behind political media machines, long before "Wag the Dog" came out.
