Shamansky, who turned 79 last week, said the “precipitating event” for his comeback-minded effort was the Medicare prescription drug program that was enacted in 2003 and started to go into effect fully this year.

Ohio Republican Bob McEwen, who was elected to the House in the same class of 1980 with Shamansky and served 12 years, also is making a comeback effort this year — a primary challenge to Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt in the 2nd District.

But what gives Republicans pause, and Shamansky hope, is that President Bush squeaked out a 2-point win in the 12th in 2004, and since then, largely because of the Iraq war and Bush’s unpopularity, the political climate has become toxic for Republicans.
What makes him most dangerous to Tiberi, Shamansky said, is that “I just don’t give a damn.” At his age, he won’t need to toe the party line to move up in seniority or to play footsy with special interests for the campaign cash to finance his re-election.
Shamansky was elected to Congress in 1980 and lost in 1982 to Republican John Kasich, Tiberi’s mentor.

I am glad Bob Shamansky follows the blog so closely, I really am.  According to Plunderbund, Bob schooled me “like a fat kid in dodge ball” after I called him old because he tossed a Reagan statement back at Pat Tiberi saying he wouldn’t hold youth and inexperience against the 43-year old Pat Tiberi.
Now, I don’t want to call Pat Tiberi old, but the fact that Shamansky thinks 43 years old is “youth” kinda proves my thesis.  Oh yeah, and calling a 3 term incumbent “inexperienced” says something about Bob too.  Especially considering Shamansky served but one term in Congress.
And of course, Plunderbund can’t help but lean on the polls.  I don’t remember him saying that all the anti-war people should shut up when the polls were 75% in favor of the war.  Now that they have come back into the anti-warriors’ favor poll is spewed every couple sentences at least.
