Topic: Bob Smith (New Jersey State Senator)

  CNN/AllPolitics Election 98
Fong initially attempted to put the senator on the Clinton hot seat by complaining she was late to address the president's problems (especially since Feinstein was quite vocal about the president's admission that he lied), but he dropped that tactic, preferring to criticize Boxer's liberalism.
State Rep. James Donelon is the GOP Senate nominee, but incumbent Sen. John Breaux (D), who served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives before moving up to the Senate twelve years ago, is a terrific politician who has succeeded in wielding significant influence in the Senate through his position as a political moderate.
State Sen. John Lim is the GOP nominee, but observers don't regard him as a serious threat to Sen. Ron Wyden (D), who won a special election to fill Sen. Bob Packwood's seat in January 1996.

The Most Vulnerable Incumbent In The Senate?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Months before the current speculation began about Gary Condit's re-election chances, Senator Bob Smith was already being considered as one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the country, especially in the wake of a forgettable 2000 presidential campaign.
Bob Smith is no stranger to tough re-election campaigns, having had the media call his re-election race for his opponent at one point on election night '96.
Smith won his re-election campaign in 1996 by only the barest of margins, defeating the unfortunately named former Rep. Dick Swett in a nail-biter race that the media had at one point in the night called for the Democrat.

New Hampshire’s Senate contest, political observers say, is one of eight tight races in the country that will either help Democrats extend their advantage or help Republicans regain theirs.
Smith has not asked the group to stop the campaign and has not publicly voiced his support for Sununu since conceding defeat in the primary on Sept. 10.
New Hampshire Democrats have defended Shaheen’s record, blaming Republicans for blocking her efforts, and countered that Sununu wants to eliminate the federal Department of Education and divert money from public schools to religious and private schools.

When Bob Smith was 4-years old, his father, a naval aviator, was killed near the end of World War II, and his family moved to his grandparents' farm in New Jersey, where he learned the value of hard work and dedication.
Smith has been out front on causes that, at first were unpopular but were later embraced by the Party, like local control and choice in education and a ban on the brutal form of infanticide known as the partial-birth abortion.
Bob Smith never has wavered on moral and ethical issues, even leaving his party briefly to launch an independent run for president in order to call attention to the waffling by some of the frontrunners.

Philosophically similar to Smith, Sununu is a bright three-term congressman favored by pollsters to defeat liberal Democratic governor Jeanne Shaheen in November's U.S. Senate race.
By July, Smith decides to leave the Republican party and run for president as an independent, in large part because the GOP accommodates politicians who support partial-birth abortion — such as New Jersey governor Christie Whitman and New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani.
Smith reclaims his Republican seniority, assumes the chairmanship, and spreads the word that environmentalists will be surprised by his willingness to work with them.
